Synopsis

#1 NATIONAL BESTSELLER
NOW A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE

At twenty-two, Cheryl Strayed thought she had lost everything. In the wake of her mother’s death, her family scattered and her own marriage was soon destroyed. Four years later, with nothing more to lose, she made the most impulsive decision of her life. With no experience or training, driven only by blind will, she would hike more than a thousand miles of the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mojave Desert through California and Oregon to Washington State—and she would do it alone. Told with suspense and style, sparkling with warmth and humor, Wild powerfully captures the terrors and pleasures of one young woman forging ahead against all odds on a journey that maddened, strengthened, and ultimately healed her.

Good vacation read

The story is interesting. The PCT is something I've wanted to do for a long time. Even did a college paper on it. Her experiences on the trail were interesting. I don't think the writing is superb, but still worth the read. Particularly if you have interest in the trail.

Lost then found.

This book debunks the myth that women are the weaker sex. Every human endeavor taken to this extreme becomes primarily a mental challenge. Cheryl more than meets the challenge.

Good read!!
January 2nd, 2015
Read this book because I had heard about the movie with Reese Witherspoon and it being one of her best performances. I always like to read the book first if based on a book. If the movie is anything like the book it should be a good movie. It was a good read from beginning to end! I bet there is a lot of people whom struggle with things that have happened in their life but to do something so drastic and hard and hike the PCT and mostly alone! What an awesome feat. Kudos to Cheryl on her accomplishment! So many people use other means to drown out life's difficult moments! Loved this book!

Ugh!
December 15th, 2014
I should have listened to my initial gut instinct and not purchased this book, but thought, how could a best selling novel, that is soon to be a major motion picture be that bad. This book is terrible, I spent a large amount of time rooting for the rattlesnakes and praying Cheryl would either fall off the side of a cliff, or quit lollygagging and finish her stupid hike. Had I have purchased this book in paper form, it would definitely be the starter fuel for my next fire, and not because I needed the extra space in my pack.

Uplifting and Emotionally Moving
February 9th, 2014
I bought this book a little reluctantly but finally decided to do so based on the reviews of other people, particularly those of the men who had read it. It was a Heather's or Ophra's pick and I'm not a big reader of autobiographies yet this one was highly recommended so I looked further finding it hard to believe the subject and author would hold my attention as much as either Heather or Ophra said it would. Everywhere I looked I saw nothing but high praise, and a lot of men writing in a similar vein to how in writing now, sceptical to how good this book could be initially only to have lived it. I can say it didn't take very many pages to understand exactly what they were saying. This isn't so much a story of an amazing hike but the very emotional telling of a life. In these pages I heard and felt all the raw emotion Cheryl lived through and understood them in a way a person that had no similar life experiences wouldn't normally. She beautifully told a powerful story of her mother's death and all the pain, confusion and emptiness that that entailed and I felt it, I understood it, not as a male or as she as a female felt it but as a fellow human. The male/female differences I wondered about before picking up this book were senseless because this is a book about human life, is hurts, wrongs, struggles and survival and beyond all that, it's triumph. Anybody with any doubts should put them away because this is more than most other books I've ever read.

An honest memoir of how the author thoroughly messed up her life, being fighting to turn it around. Bought the book because I was keen to read about the PCT, and mostly it didn't disappoint, though I wished she had written a little more on it. I did skip over some parts where the author seemingly went on and on about her life, it was a little overkill certain parts. Overall, a pretty good read, especially for females who I imagine would enjoy her emotional musings a little more.

I was moved to laughter and to tears by Cheryl Strayed's wondrous story of survival told humbly and with acute sense of the beauty and the danger of the wilderness. She defies the odds in completing a solo journey along the Pacific Crest Trail. She notes the irony of her name strayed as in lost and tells of her spin into depression, drugs, and an unhealthy promiscuous lifestyle which destroys her marriage as she grieves the death of her mother. She does not condemn herself and speaks clearly of her naiveté in even considering the PCT. She vividly describes the steps she took to prepare and allows the reader to travel along side her as she makes every mistake possible and relates it without shame and often very funnily. She wears the wrong size hiking boots depicted on the cover and ruins her feet within the first week. Her description of the desert and later the mountains is rich with the animals she meets both human and other and often is imbued with spiritual reverence. It is a testimony to her wretchedness and her determination that she continues and time and again I was amazed at her tenacity and courage. One of the few books I have ever read to the last page and immediately turned back to the first to read again. I include it as one of the best memoirs I have ever read.

I really enjoyed this biography though didn't expect to! Reading the synopsis, the author seemed rather self indulgent, but the reviews led me to give this one a chance and I am glad I did. I found myself eagerly awaiting the next time I could pick up the book and read about the next obstacle Cheryl Strayed was able to overcome and wonder how I would fare in her situation.

Wild's Teachings
September 14th, 2013
This is a book to which I will return, for it has become a part of my Life Library. I identified closely with Cheryl's pre-hike life, as I lost my mother to cancer when young. I also understood her anger about it later, on the trail. But I was most affected by her pain during the hike, her physical pain. Her courage in continuing on, despite what was happening to her feet, was inspiring. The way in which her writing touched me is evidence of the power of Cheryl's writing. And I hope her feet have healed by now!

I don't know that I expected to like this quite as much as I did--I'm not exactly Mountaineer Girl, as most can attest! A very engrossing and moving read, and probably how it would go for me if I tried to hike the PCT completely unprepared. Oh, who am I kidding-- I would never make it alive!
