Synopsis

The visionary creator of the Academy Award-winning Pan's Labyrinth and a Hammett Award-winning author bring their imaginations to this bold, epic novel about a horrifying battle between man and vampire that threatens all humanity. It is the first installment in a thrilling trilogy and an extraordinary international publishing event.

The Strain

They have always been here. Vampires. In secret and in darkness. Waiting. Now their time has come.

In one week, Manhattan will be gone. In one month, the country.

In two months—the world.

A Boeing 777 arrives at JFK and is on its way across the tarmac, when it suddenly stops dead. All window shades are pulled down. All lights are out. All communication channels have gone quiet. Crews on the ground are lost for answers, but an alert goes out to the CDC. Dr. Eph Goodweather, head of their Canary project, a rapid-response team that investigates biological threats, gets the call and boards the plane. What he finds makes his blood run cold.

In a pawnshop in Spanish Harlem, a former professor and survivor of the Holocaust named Abraham Setrakian knows something is happening. And he knows the time has come, that a war is brewing . . .

So begins a battle of mammoth proportions as the vampiric virus that has infected New York begins to spill out into the streets. Eph, who is joined by Setrakian and a motley crew of fighters, must now find a way to stop the contagion and save his city—a city that includes his wife and son—before it is too late.

Awesomely scarey as hell.

A must read for vampire fans. Not your sparkle in the sun vampire here, these guys mean business. Tounge s4ingers will get you and once that worm gets in you or your loved on, its over and out.

It has me hooked!

Knowing this is only a trilogy makes me sad because I enjoy these characters so much, & I know I won't get to be with them very long. A great view on vampires.

Gripping and accuratly scientific. Not something I find often. Also a great interpretation of the legend of the vampire. The comparison of vampirism to a virus was ingenius!

Much better than the TV series.

I found the series on FX play too much drama and useless filler in order to round out an episode. The pace of the strain is quite good and I consider it far superior to the television series.

Vampires

After watching the series on TV, I started reading the book .. I've enjoyed them .. Gives an almost realistic impression of what vampirism could be like if it existed without all the romantic notions of other portrayals .. Also gives readers a clear understanding to readers of how easily viral infections can spread in today's world .. I look forward to reading the remaining books ..

Hijacked!
September 27th, 2014
I really, really enjoyed this book and bought it and the two sequels long before the TV series aired. I am severely disappointed to find the original jacket art has since been hijacked by rather graphic "art". WTH!!! Bring back the original cover because the present cover bites.

Gruesome new twist on vampire myth
September 14th, 2014
A real page turner. Visceral and shows a less gothic, more animalistic kind of vampire. Look forward to next part!

AMAZINGLY SCARY
August 10th, 2014
Not since "It" have I been this scared reading a book. Maybe because i have the images from the FX series in my head now; but I was freaked during some of this book. It is very intense and well written. Not something I would have expected from one of the best horror directors of our time. Loved the book. Now beginning the second in the series. Enjoy!!

For a genre that has been flogged, Hogan and Del Toro still manage to capture your attention and keep you turning the pages. I will be reading this story's continuation.

I recommend this book to anyone who likes a good bit of horror. It's got the disease dynamics of the zombie myth but a much more interesting vampire origin. This first book just touches the surface on the underlying mythology, but does a great job drawing you in. It's a refreshing change to the vampire myth and all the twilight/trueblood romanticised stories and has very good visual descriptives. A very hard book to put down I found myself absorbed and read all three books in the series over one weekend, and still found myself wanting a fourth. I now can't wait for the TV series they are currently making. It promises to be a great one. It's not all glitter and glamour and has some quite tough subjects and interesting dynamics - the ending... well you'll have to read it! Highly recommended. Who knew Guillermo could turn his hand to writing too!

This book is probably one of the best books I have read in a while. You can tell it was written by a master of suspense. The first chapters had me so scared that I could hardly sleep! I definitely recommend this book to anyone looking for a good thriller.
