Synopsis

Lavinia, a seven-year-old Irish orphan with no memory of her past, arrives on a tobacco plantation where she is put to work as an indentured servant. Placed with the slaves in the kitchen house under the care of Belle, the master’s illegitimate daughter, Lavinia becomes deeply bonded to her new adopted family, even though she is forever set apart from them by her white skin. As Lavinia is slowly accepted into the world of the big house, where the master is absent and the mistress battles an opium addiction, she finds herself perilously straddling two very different worlds. When Lavinia marries the master’s troubled son and takes on the role of mistress, loyalties are brought into question, dangerous truths are laid bare and lives are put at risk. The Kitchen House is a tragic story of page-turning suspense, exploring the meaning of family, where love and loyalty prevail..

Combining the love of both white and black characters, the love between the mothers and stand in mothers, the fear of powerful and abusive men. But insight into how those men became who they are. An intense and riveting read.

A story about slavery with very well written characters you will love and hate. This is a page turnerwhere the fate of the characters pulls you in so far that you must read on. Emotionally charged. You won't want it to end. The author's comments about her inspiration for wrting this story are intriguing.

A story of slavery as told by Lavinia. This young Irish girl is raised by and nurtured by Negro slaves in the 1700s. Many loving characters are brought to life by the author and their story needed telling. Great work.

An amazing read, in this book we see the hardship and certain privileges given to a white indentured servant. But we are also reminded of the unjust and of the hell that blacks slaves had to deal with at the same time. The book demonstrates a lot of contrast between being a black slave and being a white indentured servant and the stress of both groups not mingle.

An excellent read! I loved how the women of the story stuck together despite their differences, and how their relationships changed over the passing years. These determined women did not always get what they wanted, but did find ways to make their lives more endurable despite their circumstances, even if at times the outcome was often a choice between the lesser of two evils. This is a beautiful story about love, family and friendship in the world of masters and slaves.

i've read half of this book and find it okay but not exciting. If you've read books before about slavery it's pretty much more of the same. The plot has some good twists. If you've never read a book before with this backdrop of the south, I think you"d enjoy it.

The book held my interest and kept me guessing all the way through to the end. It was an unusual perspective, seen through the eyes of a white girl growing up and identifying with the black slaves on a plantation. The books prologue sets the tone of tension and foreboding that carries through to the dramatic conclusion.

Too many stereotypes...?
December 18th, 2013
Definitely worth the read and would not be surprised if it was turned into a movie. I agree with other reviewers that the story is heavily stereotyped but isn't that the way things were? Should we not be reminded how atrocious people were, and still are, treated because they are considered not worthy in someone else's narrow minded opinion, to put it politely.
