The ultimate page-turner
September 1st, 2015
There is a danger in buying this as a trilogy: you might find yourself sucked into the story for three times as long. This story is a non-stop page-turner that keeps you on your toes. I'm already trying to decide whether or not to read it all over again. I saw the first two movies before finally reading the books, and I'm happy to say that, while I knew some of what would happen ahead of time, there was so much well-written detail in the books that I didn't care, and the ending was still quite the surprise. Nicely done. I'm beyond impressed.

We take so many of our freedoms for granted. What would we do if people we entrusted with leadership betrayed that trust to hold us all "hostage"? Would we take the desperate measures these people did? Would we endure the sacrifices & pain they did? I fervently hope we never have too find out! ]

Gripping
March 16th, 2015
I'd heard all the hype about this series, so I had to find out if it was really any good. I wasn't expecting it to be as good as people were saying, but it was. I was gripped by the very first page and could not put it down. I admit that it was a little difficult for me to adjust to the present tense, but after reading a chapter or two I didn't notice it any more. The second and third books are not quite as awesome as the first, but I was so in love with the characters and the world, I had to read them all. I definitely recommend this series.

November 13th, 2014
I'd been hearing so much about how good these books are, so I decided to give them a read. While the first book was pretty enjoyable, the second and third became slow and very unwieldy, and I mostly skimmed through the last half of this collection. Might be a fun read for children or teens, but don't go into it with high expectations as an adult.

Canonical for our time
October 2nd, 2014
I've always wanted to read a book that starts and ends with an ordinary person, rather than a king or prince or some other high ranking individual. The Hunger Games fulfils that want. Katniss is an antihero character in the truest sense, because she never is able to escape who and what she is. She isn't healed by some miraculous panacea, she remains broken but determined, and while I never loved her, I respect her, which is the greatest praise any character can get. The series isn't perfect, but as a teacher, I cannot wait to teach this to my students, finally overshadowing 1984 as the post apocalyptic book of choice. It is foremost a social commentary not on Western Civilization, but on the World itself, and for that it is glorious. It is American flavoured, but Platonic bodied. It embraces human frailty, strength, horror, and cruelty, while underlining, bolding, and italicizing that without community, we cannot survive, even while our imagined borders are exploited by our collective governments to create conflict. Change is possible, but not with sacrificing everything for the future, a future we are not likely to see or share. Ultimately, Katniss and Peeta are not the main characters. Katniss narrates the nation of Panem as a mirror to the mistakes of her ancestors, our present. We are the main characters, and Suzanne Collins' The Hunger Games is assuredly a testament to us. As brilliant as any, as heartwrenching as many, and as uncompromising as the best, I am awed.

What I think
August 11th, 2014
The first book I felt was rather boring and had a tough time staying awake while reading it. The second book picked up a little but still felt that it was lacking. The third book was excellent and very entertaining. The biggest issue I have with this series is that it is written in the first person. You really don't get to know any of the characters except katniss. In this I say is the main reason that I felt that the whole series fell flat. There is a lot of twists and turns to keep the reader intrigued by the third book but I still feel that there is a big hole in the story by not knowing what the other characters are thinking and feeling.

This trilogy is best suited for young adults. It has all of the proven-successful elements for this demographic too- an epic love triangle, teenage anguish and non-graphic violence. You become immersed in the universe Collin's creates and the story unfolds quickly making this a definite page turner. If, you are not the targeted audience you might find some moments a bit overly fortuitous for the protagonist Katniss. However, these moments are few and this book should be generally quite well received by many age brackets

As deep as Nancy Drew but more fun.
February 1st, 2014
Interesting dystopian novels parodying a combination of the inequality of wealth between first world and third world counties; our obsession with competition and reality TV and the human condition to see suffering in others. What strikes me is for a main character, Katness isn't as strong as herself; she is constantly used and intellectually manipulated by both sides. In all Peta's was a stronger character. The plotlines are predicable especially for a novel written in first person narrative. However, a very enjoyable young adult (teen) series.
