The dragons are gone, or are they? Five hundred years after the last dragon's death, Jenabel Sanders and Deagon Maddock are both called to help return the the majestic beasts to their land. A mate's call draws Jenabel to find him while Deagon's search starts out looking for a girl. Love or not, without friends, family, and a little dragon magic, the Pachemus dragons will remain gone.

When Jenabel Sanders goes to sleep, she knows she will have the option of only two dreams. Option one: having a conversation with a dragon that doesn’t exist, at least not in the real world. Option two: being intimidated and scared by a man whose face she never sees. These two dreams will lead Jenabel to a world that was once thought a myth taught by her uncle since she was little and where she will find herself in love with a dragon shape shifter who died five hundred years ago fighting an evil spawned from the greed of a ruler.

Sixteen year old Deagon Maddock has inherited a crumbling fortress at the death of his parents and uncle. While cleaning the place, he finds treasure in the form of an extraordinary book and a ghost to whom he is a direct decedent. With his dragon crystal ball, he and the ghost set off in search of Jenabel where she is already on her journey with her brothers and uncle to find her dragon. When a kidnapping takes place, not only is someone not who they seem, but vengeance is now sought for a deed over five hundred years old.
