This book describes an approach to working with children and youth who have been labeled emotionally disturbed, behavior disordered, or mentally ill.  The approach - known as "Re-ED" - is based not on pychodynamic principles but on educational , psychological, and ecological principles.  It seeks to help children in as near to natural settings as possible, strengthening support systems, reducing system discord and helping chldren learn to make use of normal sources of affection, instruction and discipline. Hobbs maintained that "emotional disturbance is not something in the person, not something a child or adolescent has, not a neurosis or a behavior disorder or anything else that does not express an ongoing transactional process involving a child and people important in his or her life.  Emotional disturbance is a symptom not of individual pathology but of a malfunctioning human ecosystem."
