Synopsis

In this true story, Armande Martel, a young nun from Quebec, is arrested by the Germans in 1940 during a stay at her religious order’s mother house in Brittany. She spends the war years in a German concentration camp. After her return to Canada, she leaves the Church, finds the love of her life in Montreal, and adopts Lise Dion.

Growing up, Lise is familiar with only a few facts of her mother’s past. It’s when she clears her mother’s small apartment after her death that Lise Dion discovers the key to the blue trunk, which was always locked. This key unlocks the mystery of Armande’s early life, and Lise decides to write The Secret of the Blue Trunk.

Excellent, quick read.

This was an enthralling read for me. I stayed up late to finish it. The writer focused on a part of her life as a survivor with those closest to her who helped her live through these four years. This is not a book filled with facts but with feelings that the reader truly experiences.

Great!

I truly enjoyed this book, it is one that you don't want to put down. Heartbreaking and almost unbelievable the hardships, this poor woman and her fellow prisoners experienced. How is it possible that a human could treat others with such disrespect and horror.

A really beautiful story albeit the era was not a kind one. I can't help feeling a little sad that the writer's mother did not want to share the contents of the blue trunk with her daughter before she passed.

What a tribute to the strength of love! A mother's love for her daughter is reflected from her daughter back to her mother. And here is proof that bullies are fundamentally weak. We need to learn how to give of ourselves free-spiritedly. We waste far too much time and strength in having to mount self defences when we don't have each others' backs. I couldn't imagine this connection of the girls of the mat - Armande, Simone, Mathilde and Irena. The amateur literary style survives because of the power of the message. It was gripping.

This was a most unusual book and very well told. Lise Dion managed to capture the oppressive feeling of underground captivity and endurance. It is certainly about survival and quiet courage. The device of the notebook was intriguing and compelling and gives great freshness to the narrative.

While the story started slow in the first few chapters, I was soon captivated by the story of Armande and found the book to be written in a way that portrayed a different aspect of world war two. I was shocked by some of the outcome and yet did not questioned that it had happened the way it was shared. The book portrays the courageous survival of someone caught in the wrong place at the wrong time and I have told others already that they should read it.

The truly powerful, and powerfully true story of a woman's experience from a convent in Quebec to a forced labour camp in Nazi Germany. The story is told in journals discovered after her death. The experiences are relayed in an honest and unembellished way. An young innocent who learns about the bonds of friendship and trust, the inner strength of every individual, and even humanity and caring in unexpected places. This is the personal revelation of a survivor and a gift to the adopted daughter she loved.
