The Secret Garden
The Secret Garden a timeless children's classic, by Frances Hodgson Burnett, is one of the great classics of children’s literature, although now much more admired than when it was first published in 1910 as it is now. One of the central themes of the novel, that good health comes from healthy food, physical exercise, and a positive attitude towards life, is increasingly obvious to many of us, and has now, or is being, being confirmed by medical research. ‘Organic’ foods, ‘free-range’ chickens, and growing concern for our physical and community environments are becoming common wisdom now, and many diseases as seemingly unrelated as childhood myopia and rickets (both associated with lack of time spent in the open air and sun) have been found to be more closely-related to how gracefully we live than to "germs." What we do is sometimes as important as what happens to us, and ‘being braved' in the face of adversity sometimes turns out to be a life-saver, just as it does in the book.
