Synopsis

MORE THAN SEVEN YEARS ON THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER LIST

The first book by the beloved author of the new novel The Silver Star, the extraordinary, one-of-a-kind, “nothing short of spectacular” (Entertainment Weekly) memoir from one of the world’s most gifted storytellers.

The Glass Castle is a remarkable memoir of resilience and redemption, and a revelatory look into a family at once deeply dysfunctional and uniquely vibrant. When sober, Jeannette’s brilliant and charismatic father captured his children’s imagination, teaching them physics, geology, and how to embrace life fearlessly. But when he drank, he was dishonest and destructive. Her mother was a free spirit who abhorred the idea of domesticity and didn’t want the responsibility of raising a family.

The Walls children learned to take care of themselves. They fed, clothed, and protected one another, and eventually found their way to New York. Their parents followed them, choosing to be homeless even as their children prospered.

The Glass Castle is truly astonishing—a memoir permeated by the intense love of a peculiar but loyal family.

This is about your childhood
December 30th, 2014
This book is a precise instrument that will extract your childhood and lay it bare in front of you so you can't look away. While Wall's experiences seem unordinary, they are an exact tale of childhood.

Disturbingly rivetting!
November 6th, 2014
As a father of four of my own I kept wishing I could intervene, talk to the Walls parents, come alongside them, report them or simply whisk the children out of the squalor the parents chose for them. An amazing tale of surviving and thriving for the author and her brother, less so for her older sister and the impact on the youngest is heartbreaking to read about. Thanks for sharing Jeannette.

Good light read. Made me explore a bit more deeply what I thought of other people. You never know what events in their lives have shaped them into who they are. We all have a story... Some are just a bit more interesting because of their life challenges...it can make you or it can break you....you can chose to rise above or give up and be crushed. Really enjoyed The Glass Castle

Slow start and upsetting parents
April 17th, 2014
At first it starts interesting then falls and gets a lil boring and towards the end you can't help but think, sad, and upsetting thoughts about the parents. I liked the book, the kids were strong, and I would definitely like to know about the younger sis more.

Having been abused as a child and having knowledge of the abuse a relative is going through I understand the pain and frustration these children endured. This book shows how resourceful children can be. Good read.

I don't understand how parents could raise their children like that. The children should have been taken from them.

Reading this story made me shake my heads at times......I will never understand why parents choose to starve their children, make them freeze in the winter and go without basic necesities all the while sitting on a fortune..........my mouth literally dropped at the end of this story......to learn what these parents put their children through is remarkable!!!! Cudo's to the writer for chosing a better life for herself and making it on her own!

A great, easy read! Although the family's dysfunction sometimes catches you by surprise, at times you will find yourself laughing out loud at how they deal with situations with such normalcy. A story of defying the quirkiest of odds as children to become successful adults!

The book is very gripping and definitely a page turner. It is hard to believe the adversity that she faced only to escape that life and become the success that she is today. Very much worth the read.

I really enjoyed the Memoir of Jeannette Walls. She writes of her life of struggle, adventure, and hardship as a child of misguided, eccentric parents. The Glass Castle displayed the incredible courage and resiliency of children living in a much deprived upbringing.

This is the hard to believe story of an American family, as told by one of its younger members. You may not believe it, you may hate some of them, but you will be happy we live in a free society where such characters can exist and think the way they want unimpeded.
