    Truly great!

This series is simply incredible. Dark and gritty, with characters that you don't want to root for, and totally do. Cook has a real talent for capturing the true spirit of military camaraderie and grey morality. His fantasy world is very original, and his writing style is engaging. I recommend these books to any one who loves a good fantasy.

    The Black Company

The characters themselves were interesting but the author did not give them much depth...maybe in later books, I will have to see. The plot was interesting and labyrinthine - the bad guys and the good guys had morals that were only a whisker apart if that - more like their perspective was just slightly different. This is more like the real world (for good or for bad, depending on your perspective) than most works of fantasy. The system of magic was also enjoyable. I would recommend this book as a good read and I will probably be reading more of the series.
