A War Nurse Trilogy begins with Tess, The Boer War. Tess Wallace is a young girl determined to be a nurse in an era when female independence and personal ambition is generally frowned upon. She achieves her goal of becoming a nurse just as Canada is on the cusp of war. The Motherland, England, is asking her colonies to provide troops to fight against the Dutch Boers of South Africa who have declared war on Britain. Canada has agreed to send her sons to fight on foreign soil for the first time in her young confederate history and accompanying these soldiers is a medical contingent of the Canadian Army Medical Corps. Included in this Corps is a slate of female nurses known as Nursing Sisters.
Tess has been approached to volunteer her services, though she had just obtained her nursing certificate and has no wartime experience. Knowing it is the opportunity of a lifetime, she has a choice to make. Remain behind and marry her long time love, Henry, or accept the challenges of being part of a select group of caregivers known as War Nurses.
Come and share the hopes and aspirations of a young Canadian girl - her loves and tragedies in times of war and peace; and accompany Tess on her journey as she grows from a young, ambitious lass raised in a small coal-mining community, to an accomplished "woman of the world".
