Synopsis

FROM THE AUTHOR OF THE BESTSELLING BIOGRAPHIES OF BENJAMIN FRANKLIN AND ALBERT EINSTEIN, THIS IS THE EXCLUSIVE BIOGRAPHY OF STEVE JOBS.

Based on more than forty interviews with Jobs conducted over two years—as well as interviews with more than a hundred family members, friends, adversaries, competitors, and colleagues—Walter Isaacson has written a riveting story of the roller-coaster life and searingly intense personality of a creative entrepreneur whose passion for perfection and ferocious drive revolutionized six industries: personal computers, animated movies, music, phones, tablet computing, and digital publishing.

At a time when America is seeking ways to sustain its innovative edge, and when societies around the world are trying to build digital-age economies, Jobs stands as the ultimate icon of inventiveness and applied imagination. He knew that the best way to create value in the twenty-first century was to connect creativity with technology. He built a company where leaps of the imagination were combined with remarkable feats of engineering.

Although Jobs cooperated with this book, he asked for no control over what was written nor even the right to read it before it was published. He put nothing off-limits. He encouraged the people he knew to speak honestly. And Jobs speaks candidly, sometimes brutally so, about the people he worked with and competed against. His friends, foes, and colleagues provide an unvarnished view of the passions, perfectionism, obsessions, artistry, devilry, and compulsion for control that shaped his approach to business and the innovative products that resulted.

Driven by demons, Jobs could drive those around him to fury and despair. But his personality and products were interrelated, just as Apple’s hardware and software tended to be, as if part of an integrated system. His tale is instructive and cautionary, filled with lessons about innovation, character, leadership, and values.

Very interesting insight into his life

The book was surprisingly both in support and against Jobs and the way he conducted his business. In the end you can't deny that what he did was amazing - just at cost? Very interesting read about one of the best CEOs of our time.

Not the mesiah sold by the media
December 1st, 2015
Media sold it as a world hero. The world would be basically the same without him. Steve Wozniak or Denis Ritchie are real genius and nobody mentions them. Nicola Tesla, the world would be very different if he had not existed. SJ was an opportunist.

A very compelling biography of one of the most important personalities of this century. The innovations brought to the world by this man have changed the way we relate to one another and to all of the things we consider entertainment. There are few aspects of living that are not influenced by Jobs and his developments, these are well chronicled in this book

Excellent Story & Portrayal
April 12th, 2014
I purposely waited to read this as I did not want to be influenced by sentiment after his death & I'm glad I did. It gave me a better perspective on his true genius. As an Apple disciple for the past 10 years, I can only hope that Apple continues Steve's pursuit of perfection rather than profit in the years to come. Sure he may have been an A-hole at times but who isn't. He seemed to reconcile with those closest before he died & all who worked with him felt he brought out the best in them so, it couldn't be all bad. RIP Steve Jobs & great portrayal Walter Isaacson.

Great book and very interesting story about Steve Jobs life. The book was good in that is showed the character flaws of Steve Jobs that cause him to struggle with having a family and to do so well with Apple. The author did a great job of showing both sides of Steve Jobs so that you as the reader were allowed to decide what you thought of him. Steve Jobs was a brilliant man and the father of Apple however he was far from perfect and this book does a great job portraying this.

A fascinating and flawed man, Steve Jobs proved that even not-nice guys can finish first. The world needs dreamers who are part fortune-teller, part genius, to predict what the rest of us will need and want in the future. This biography paints Jobs as a difficult, self-centred, complicated, egotistical visionary and a at times, a hypocrite. But there's no question that he changed the world for the better. Terrific book.

Brilliant insight into the roller coaster life of Steve Jobs. Steve Jobs career spirals out of control as Apple Mac grows, leaving him to peruse the now hugely successful "i" revolution. Walter Isaacson was approached by Jobs himself to write this biography, and together, create this open and honest biography of one mans journey of ambition to make the world of electronics a better, easier place for all. I think Steve Jobs is one man who has changed the lives of a major percentage of the worlds population.

For those who love technology and business, this is a great read. It gives great insight into the history of the birth of the PC, Mac and personal computing as well as MP3s, the iPod and more. You also learn about the tight network between the companies in silicon valley and how sharing, stealing, and working together taking various technologies helped Apple launch innovative products. And then there is Steve Jobs.....and he and his business methods help make this a 5 star read

If you worked in the high tech industry, especially for a company located in Silicon Valley this book brings back memories of the good times and bad for Apple and many similar companies started by visionaries. This is a very well written book with the feel, at times, of a documentary or biography and at other times of historical fiction. It continues my love (admire) / hate relationship with the character of Steve Jobs and it is hard not to get involved or even emotional when reading about his view of reality and interaction with people in his life. It leaves you wondering what else would Jobs have done with our world if he had still been with us. I found that the book ended rather abruptly and would have liked some kind of closure or after thought. I will definitely read more of Isaason's biographies.

Every once in a while, a person comes along, who isn't perfect but manages to do something revolutionary. It is up to us, whether we learn from his success and mistakes, whether we focus on his good side or the bad one. But the person's impact on this world is undeniable. How would it feel to live with this person from the beginning? How did he come to be, as he is? What impact did he have on people around him? How did he think? Mr Isaacson tries, I think, to answer these very questions in the case of Steve Jobs; and doesn't seem to have compromised in honesty. 4 stars, because the narrative can digress a bit at times from the subject at hand.

Excellent book, provides a detailed glimpse into a man of extremes. He was a certainly a complex man with many conflicting attribute, attitudes and opinions. It did a good job of letting the reader see both his strengths and his vulnerabilities and weaknesses. I really enjoyed it. While he was truly a visionary who changed how the world lives, he was also struggling with his past all the while.

The End
April 22nd, 2013
Once in a life opportunity, reading this book in the same time that this things happened, well at least some of them; its amazing!. I have read this book entirely in an ipad. Its magical having a piece of his legacy in my hands wile i was reading all the secrets of his personal life and its way of seeing the world. Now when a i see this objects, its not anymore an electronic device, Its the proof of a living man, the struggle to achieve his dreams, the happy and the sad, and the commitment to his beliefs. This book gives you the opportunity to see a man who made history in humanity, and that he changed the way we approach and interact to our own world, just by giving us tools to unleash our imagination in a different way. As i finished this book i ended it with a feeling of love and gratitude, with a bit of mist in my eyes. For me the apple products are the testimony of a passion, suffer and a lot of love, geniality and commitment of a bunch of people who had a feeling and pursuit it until it was real. For sure never in history it was possible to see an object with feelings imprinted in its DNA this close and so real. With this you can realized that this objects and this company was made by persons with feelings, mistakes, passion and beliefs, its not any more just a cold commercial object; it's their testimony.
