A woman must come to terms with the circumcision she endured as a child in Africa

In Tashi’s tribe, the Olinka, young girls undergo circumcision as an initiation into the community. Tashi manages to avoid this fate at first, but when pressed by tribal leaders, she submits. Years later, married and living in America as Evelyn Johnson, Tashi’s inner pain emerges. As she questions why such a terrifying, disfiguring sacrifice was required, she sorts through the many levels of subjugation with which she’s been burdened over the years.

In Possessing the Secret of Joy, Alice Walker exposes the abhorrent practice of female genital mutilation in an unforgettable, moving novel.

This ebook features an illustrated biography of Alice Walker including rare photos from the author’s personal collection.

I had some trouble getting into the book but found it a great read in the end. Very tragic for all girls of genital circumcision.

Quite an eye opener.

The book started out slowly for me. The switching back and forth between characters seemed unnecessary and confusing. I almost gave up on reading the book; but I carried on. The subject matter (female circumcision) is something I had NO idea about. I found myself researching that and she that this mutilation must be stopped. There are several sub texts within the book. Definitely a great read.
