2003-2004 Rankings of new Pianos is over 50 pages of objective analysis. We review about 40 selected piano brands including Yamaha, Bluthner, Kawai, and Pearl River. The report also includes Consumer Reports-style recommendations, information on award winning pianos, and side-articles on "Trends in the Piano Market" and "Buying a New Piano Versus a Used Piano." Why bother? First, a piano is a major financial investment. Since a piano will generally last for generations, making the right purchase decision is important. Second, there are many pre-conceptions about piano brands which, if true at one time, may not still apply today. Finally, the piano industry is full of exaggeration; the buying public needs guidance! To that end, we sought out five experts representing various backgrounds to evaluate new pianos. All pianos were evaluated at one of the industry's trade shows in either Shanghai, China (October 2002), Anaheim, California (January 2003), or Frankfurt, Germany (March 2003).
