Synopsis

On a clear night in late June 2005, four U.S. Navy SEALs left their base in northern Afghanistan for the mountainous Pakistani border. Their mission was to capture or kill a notorious al Qaeda leader known to be ensconced in a Taliban stronghold surrounded by a small but heavily armed force. Less then twenty-four hours later, only one of those Navy SEALs remained alive.

This is the story of fire team leader Marcus Luttrell, the sole survivor of Operation Redwing, and the desperate battle in the mountains that led, ultimately, to the largest loss of life in Navy SEAL history. But it is also, more than anything, the story of his teammates, who fought ferociously beside him until he was the last one left-blasted unconscious by a rocket grenade, blown over a cliff, but still armed and still breathing. Over the next four days, badly injured and presumed dead, Luttrell fought off six al Qaeda assassins who were sent to finish him, then crawled for seven miles through the mountains before he was taken in by a Pashtun tribe, who risked everything to protect him from the encircling Taliban killers.

A six-foot-five-inch Texan, Leading Petty Officer Luttrell takes us, blow-by-blow, through the brutal training of America's warrior elite and the relentless rites of passage required by the Navy SEALs. He transports us to a monstrous battle fought in the desolate peaks of Afghanistan, where the beleaguered American team plummeted headlong a thousand feet down a mountain as they fought back through flying shale and rocks. In this rich , moving chronicle of courage, honor, and patriotism, Marcus Luttrell delivers one of the most powerful narratives ever written about modern warfare-and a tribute to his teammates, who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

Outstanding Act of Bravery
March 10th, 2015
This is an extraordinary book everyone should read before they speak out about military brutality. I loved Evey minutes I spent reading this book, I now know what being a US NAVY SEAL means, these are brave men trained to go into combat, face evilness and enemies who doesn't think twice about killing or torturing them and doesn't have a clue about those ridiculous ROE we impose on our soldiers. We send them to war, so we can continue to live freely, with their Hans tied behind their back. You want to know more, read this, story, it'll break your heart.

"Lone Survivor"
March 8th, 2014
The selfless sacrifices made and the heroic honor exemplified by these men are provided for each and every one of us, as Americans. It should most surely and sadly shame those who politically play out their own weak and selfish failings on the currently corrupt and morally bankrupt battlefields of government in Washington, D.C..

I believe that this book should be required reading in all US American history classes. I have read many books similar to this one, but none of them compare to Marcus Luttrell's story of loss, endurance, loyalty, and courage. Lone Survivor is a page-turner, a tear-jerker and an invigorating rioter all coalesced into a profoundly thought-provoking and galvanizing true life story.

LOVED this book! Only complaint was that I did not get enough sleep! I could not put it down at night. I would often find myself still reading into the wee hours of the morning, choosing to give up sleep just to ready "a few more pages". A must for any Kobo owner.

Such an incredibly emotional rollercoaster of a book... gives you such insight into what it takes to become a Navy Seal and the actuality of being a member of a Seal team and what you would do for your team. Marcus is such an inspiration and I just want to applaud him for his bravery and to his fallen teammates may God Bless them! An awe-inspiring book...

Lone Survivor: Reality of a SEAL
January 31st, 2014
Of all the SEAL books and movies I have encountered, Lone Survivor puts the SEAL Brotherhood at the forefront, like no other. You cannot pen a SEAL story without action, and there is plenty of that here. But, there is more to a SEAL's life than espionage, assassination, reconnaissance and mission training. The Brotherhood is what motivates you, beyond God, Country and Team. Marcus has made this abundantly clear, and we are all thankful that Mr. Luttrell was encouraged to share his experience with others. The motto, "My best day was yesterday" is clear in this case. Thank you, Marcus, and all our SEAL brothers.

This is an amazing book about amazing men facing impossible odds. This true story is an adrenaline page turner. If as some reviewers say- you find it to be overtly patriotic propaganda or untrue BS, then you are simply looking for something that isn't there. Of course the men have to believe in what they do or they couldn't do it. If that gets in the way of your version of the world, read Alice in Wonderland instead. This is a must read.

I thought this would be better. I'm not sure how much is actually Luttrel's words. It comes across as overly patriotic and border line propaganda. Obviously he went through a lot while waiting to be rescued, but the style of writing is a bit weak.

Slightly slow start but the buildup help to understand the deep rooted and possibly innate strength possessed by certain people. This was a personal story which gave the author license to offer emmotional observations. That's what made this read very satisfying.

January 11th, 2014
This should be required reading for every American elected into office, if not every American. I pray this enlightens: *The "people around the pretty table in the air-conditioned office" that savages do not comprehend civility *The mainstream media that, all too often, they are cancerous *The average American to our military's daily truth *Everyone that a smile is universal

Patriotism and heroism at its best
January 7th, 2014
Outstanding story of the trials of one enduring, heroic member of the Navy SEALs, this has rekindled that patriotic fire within this Army vet who can now grasp why this brotherhood of highly specialized young men remain true to one another in defending our country to the final end. My respect for you all has increased tenfold and I am more than honored to know that you're out there, against any and all odds working, fighting, sacrificing to defend our USA. Words can't even begin to express my gratitude to Mr. Luttrell for sharing this poignant, moving account of what happened to these brave men, giving 110% and more for our freedom, and to all SEALs and our military for your dedication. I highly recommend this story to anyone who believes in America, to get some comprehension of what our fighting forces must endure to become what they are today, to see what they're up against and to appreciate what their duty truly stands for.
