Finnikin was only a child during the five days of the unspeakable, when the royal family of Lumatere were brutally murdered, and an imposter seized the throne. Now a curse binds all who remain inside Lumateres walls, and those who escaped roam the surrounding lands as exiles, persecuted and despairing, dying by the thousands in fever camps. In a narrative crackling with the tension of an imminent storm, Finnikin, now on the cusp on manhood, is compelled to join forces with an arrogant and enigmatic young novice named Evanjalin, who claims that her dark dreams will lead the exiles to a surviving royal child and a way to pierce the cursed barrier and regain the land of Lumatere. But Evanjalins unpredictable behavior suggests that she is not what she seemsand the startling truth will test Finnikins faith not only in her, but in all he knows to be true about himself and his destiny.

"Be prepared for the worst, my love, for it lives next door to the best."  Wow.  Author Melinda Marchetta have completely left me speechless after reading this spectacular book. It frightens me to read such an astounding book where the story flows immensely without any flaws.  Every fragment of the plot were so unexpected and humbling to read. Though I did foresee some parts of the plot it was how it was written that swooned me. As I read about each character and the tragedy that everyone had to face, I felt my heart swell with the exact emotions.  I don't think my words can describe this book and do it great justice. For all I have to offer to anyone who wants to read an adventurous fantasy book, they should jump the chance and pick up this marvelous one!  Definitely blew my mind!  "My king?" "Yes, my queen?" "Take me home."

An absolutely beautiful fantasy novel. If you've read any of Melina Marchetta work then you know that she is able to create complex and realistic characters who develop throughout the story. Her attention to the development of her characters is not lost in her transition to fantasy. This novel combines the beautiful exploration of its characters that are the focus of Melina Marchetta's other novels with an intricate and exciting fantasy plot. Originally released as a standalone novel this novel is not part of the Lumatere Chronicles. The additional novels are equal in quality to the first. I have already recommended this and I would do so again.
