Synopsis

Ken Follett’s Century Trilogy follows the fortunes of five intertwined families—American, German, Russian, English, and Welsh—as they make their way through the twentieth century. It has been called “potent, engrossing” (Publishers Weekly) and “truly epic” (Huffington Post). USA Today said, “You actually feel like you’re there.”

Edge of Eternity, the finale, covers one of the most tumultuous eras of all: the 1960s through the 1980s, encompassing civil rights, assassinations, Vietnam, the Berlin Wall, the Cuban Missile Crisis, presidential impeachment, revolution—and rock and roll.

East German teacher Rebecca Hoffman discovers she’s been spied on by the Stasi for years and commits an impulsive act that will affect her family for generations… George Jakes, himself bi-racial, bypasses corporate law to join Robert F. Kennedy’s Justice Department and finds himself in the middle of not only the seminal events of the civil rights battle, but also a much more personal battle… Cameron Dewar, the grandson of a senator, jumps at the chance to do some espionage for a cause he believes in, only to discover that the world is much more dangerous than he’d imagined… Dimka Dvorkin, a young aide to Khrushchev, becomes an agent for good and for ill as the Soviet Union and the United States race to the brink of nuclear war, while his twin sister, Tania, carves out a role that will take her from Moscow to Cuba to Prague to Warsaw—and into history.

These characters and many others find their lives inextricably entangled as they add their personal stories and insight to the most defining events of the 20th century. From the opulent offices of the most powerful world leaders to the shabby apartments of those trying to begin a new empire, from the elite clubs of the wealthy and highborn to the passionate protests of a country’s most marginalized citizens, this is truly a drama for the ages.

With the Century Trilogy, Follett has guided readers through an entire era of history with a master’s touch. His unique ability to tell fascinating, brilliantly researched stories that captivate readers and keep them turning the pages is unparalleled. In this climactic and concluding saga, Follett brings us into a world we thought we knew, but now will never seem the same again.

Follett brings history to life

An amazing overview of the twentieth century from inside the lives of all four major powers. One cannot not be anything but thankful to those generations that went before to give us what we have now.

Great end to an amazing series!

Amazing book. Although it wasn't as strong as the previous two in the series (mainly because of the the fact that it covered the Cold War instead of the two World Wars), I enjoyed it all the same. Love the characters!

Great finish!

Mr. Follett pulled off an amazing conclusion for his trilogy. While continuing the families we came to love in the first two books, he manages to bring us right up in some of the more turbulent decades of the US' 20th century. I was riveted throughout the book and felt a great satisfaction at the end.

Wow!!
August 15th, 2015
Follett is so easy to read. This 3rd book in the trilogy was the best, but all 3 were excellent and fascinating. Love the ease with which he mixes together the real history of 20th century events with the storylines of multiple characters from multiple families in multiple countries, which allows the reader to better understand the complexities of the eras and feel like you are a part of it as it unfolds. Fabulous. Where is #4???

Well written with a clever and almost true to life narration of what the second half of the 20th century was like after World War II with all its political conflicts.

The first two books were delightful. This final novel simply ran out of steam and i felt like the writer's fire had died half way through this book.

An Emotional Journey
March 15th, 2015
For those of us who lived through the second half of the Twentieth Century, this book is packed with pathos and conflicting emotions. In a way, it is amazing that any of us are still alive. I am profoundly grateful to have lived to see the truth revealed about so many things that we knew in our hearts but could not prove. It was truly the best of times and the worst of times. Follett has written another masterpiece.

Confusing
January 9th, 2015
I found this book confusing in that it took quite a while to keep the characters straight. In the first two books the characters were exciting as were the story lines. This final book was too long and drawn out and then near the end it seemed rushed, almost as if the author too wanted it over.

History through fiction
January 4th, 2015
An outstanding conclusion to this trilogy that not only entertains through the interweaving stories of families but enlightens a reader to historical events that become so much more relevant when presented through the lives or ordinary (though fictional) characters. Thanks for making me a little wiser of the world's modern history!

The edge of eternity
December 7th, 2014
Growing ip in Europe in the fifties brought back many memories of events described in the book, as well as events later on to conclusion, being able to relate and having a fresh recollection of a number of these events just brought the story that much closer to home, to the extend that at time it felt like getting a personal glimpse on history, even if it was fictionalized.

The entire trilogy was wonderful...The vastness of the history covered quite astounding. Follett created a series of characters and families that will stay with me for a long time. Honestly, my eyes hurt as I simply could not put this last book down until I had consumed every word.

Edge of Eternity.
November 9th, 2014
I very much enjoy Ken Follett's novels. In particular I have enjoyed the twenty century trilogy. Perhaps of the three books this then third was the least compelling for me. I enjoyed the characters so much I the forest two books and I felt that they were lost in book, and the were not strong enough characters to replace them. Nonetheless I would definitely recommend this series.

Historical I accursed
November 7th, 2014
Book was well written and interesting. Don't understand however why Mr Follett found it necessary to rewrite and lean major historical events to his personal liking. In that regard the overall product is disappointing. I will not recommend to others.

Bitterly disappointed
November 3rd, 2014
I have enjoyed many of his books, but Follett's hopelessly blatant bias destroyed what could have been a wonderful book His need to sully the history of those politicians he dislikes is only surpassed by his apparent ability to completely ignore failed administrations like Carter's. The Korean War apparently never happened and Truman and Eisenhower are not even worthy of a chapter.

Told through the eyes of a select group of families, the history covered provides a lesson to those unfamiliar with the times. But as a novel it does not compare with the first two of the trilogy.

EDGE OF ETERNITY BY KEN FOLLETT
October 7th, 2014
The families in the book lived the same history that I did which made for a very engaging read. At first I felt that there were too many characters for me to become attached to but as I remembered them from the previous books they became more real and I was immersed in their lives and circumstances. I remembered the historical events from the outside looking in but these characters brought me the view from the inside, up close and personal. I loved the way the families were all connected in some way across countries, races and backgrounds, from rich to poor. Another good read by Follett.

Edge of Eternity
October 2nd, 2014
Maybe not as powerful as the previous two books; no need to learn about, get to know, love or hate the characters but a fabulous insight into the parallels between so called American democracy and the communist states. Having lived through this period of history it made one realise how greatly the world changed. This book cannot be read on its own because it would not make sense to the reader. As a trilogy it makes for wonderful reading.

The Edge of Eternity

This was a moving story that took me back to my childhood where I remember Ed many of the events which too place in the book. It gave me a perspective that I did not have. I remember the Cuban missile crisis and how afraid we all were. I remember the Berlin Wall coming down too. This book gave me information I did not have as a child and helped me put the history in context. A great read and a fitting end to the trilogy. Well done!
