Synopsis

Stephen King returns to the character and territory of one of his most popular novels ever, The Shining, in this instantly riveting novel about the now middle-aged Dan Torrance and the very special twelve-year-old girl he must save from a tribe of murderous paranormals.

On highways across America, a tribe of people called the True Knot travel in search of sustenance. They look harmless—mostly old, lots of polyester, and married to their RVs. But as Dan Torrance knows, and spunky twelve-year-old Abra Stone learns, the True Knot are quasi-immortal, living off the steam that children with the shining produce when they are slowly tortured to death.

Haunted by the inhabitants of the Overlook Hotel, where he spent one horrific childhood year, Dan has been drifting for decades, desperate to shed his father’s legacy of despair, alcoholism, and violence. Finally, he settles in a New Hampshire town, an AA community that sustains him, and a job at a nursing home where his remnant shining power provides the crucial final comfort to the dying. Aided by a prescient cat, he becomes “Doctor Sleep.”

Then Dan meets the evanescent Abra Stone, and it is her spectacular gift, the brightest shining ever seen, that reignites Dan’s own demons and summons him to a battle for Abra’s soul and survival. This is an epic war between good and evil, a gory, glorious story that will thrill the millions of devoted readers of The Shining and satisfy anyone new to this icon in the King canon.

Action-packed and bittersweet
December 3rd, 2015
SK brings together a familiar character, some familiar situations and an entirely new brand of evil into a tense page-turner. I dig all the references made to The Shining, and how the new story is cleverly interwoven with it in many ways, that there were also a few instances that tugged at your heartstrings, simply because the Torrances were as relatable as any other family, though not as ordinary. A worthy sequel indeed.

This fantastic tale of Dan Torrence as an adult was, to me, perfect in its sense of maturity both in the character and the author. Mr. King really came through and left me wanting more. If there's ever a continuation I'll be the first to pick it up.

All I can say is, "WOW"! There's not a dull moment with Doctor Sleep! I felt like a child waiting on recess to go out and play, the whole time I read! I've got to put the book down so many times because I have duties to attend, and I just (half assed) them so I could find out what happened next! I'm going back now to read The Shining! I saw the movie, but I just know that the book will be more informative and betttter! Thank you for lending me your mind Mr. King! You Rock (as always)!

It was a treat to learn what happened to Danny (Doc) Torrance. That loving boy was bound to self medicate after the horrors of the Overlook, but it was gratifying that he got himself to AA. Abra was a delightful character, who also may need to be revisited one day (that temper!). That the epic battle between good and evil took place where the Overlook burned to the ground was so just. Evil exists and the True Knot was a terrifying example of how it might flourish. Stephen King never disappoints!

The Shining part 2
March 1st, 2014
Stephen King hasn't lost his touch. This sequel to The Shining is wonderful. Danny Torrence is now an adult and he is still being haunted by the ghosts from the Overlook. He has become an alcoholic like his father, but trying to recover from that. He ends up helping this girl who also has the shining. Those final chapter are frenetic and loads of fun. Get ready to lose some sleep! My heart was racing by the time I finished reading this new King gem! Now Mr. King needs to write a sequel to Salem's Lot which he promised us years ago. Must read!

Loved this book and could not put it down! I have read most of Stephen King's books and in my opinion, Doctor Sleep is one of his best, right up there with his classics like The Stand, It and Salem's Lot. Also, readers need not have read the previous novel, The Shining, to follow the story of this novel. The background story is provided, and those familiar with The Shining will see the old characters return and their stories revisited and concluded. This is a must read for all horror and mystery fans, you will not be disappointed!

I love Stephen King novels and believe he writes about the dark side of the human soul better than any other modern writer. Dan Torrance, haunted by the remnants of his childhood trauma at the Overlook Hotel, follows in his father's footsteps and turns to alcohol as an escape from ugly reality. While Dan isn't a bad guy, he does bad things. The ordinary bad things people do when they are weak. But Dan finds a way to earn back a meaningful life and is set on a course to help a young girl with a powerful "shine" who has caught the eye of a group of nomad soul suckers. There are so many elements to enjoy in this story including wonderful darkly enchanting villains. Yet with so many top notch writers, the art of editing has been lost. While I treasure every word within King's early novels, there are just too many of them in this story. Longer is not always better, and a tightly edited novel is much better paced than this one. I found myself slogged down in needlessly long passages and trying to skip forward just to keep the momentum. If you have lots of time and are very patient, this novel will not disappoint.

I was very excited to read the sequel to The Shining, though it's not my favorite King novel, it cannot be denied it is a classic. Getting to see what happened to the survivors of the Overlook Hotel was a treat, especially Danny (Dan) Torrance. Dan has grown up & no surprise his "shining" has not made his adult life any better than his tormented childhood. We also me Abra Stone, who like Dan is a child with so much power that she gets on the radar of a group of travellers called the True Knot. Ruthless people who live forever feeding off the "steam" that children with the shining release as they are tortured & murdered. You don't have to have read The Shining, there's enough explanation in the book & it really is mostly about the new story & not the past. I would always read the first book before a sequel but I think this is one of the rare kind that could stand on its own. Definitely an good read both as a sequel & a stand alone novel. As usual King weaves a fantastic tale that I stay up with late into the night, telling myself just one more chapter.
