Life, and love, in Cuba

At one level this book reads like a male Bridget Jones Diary as it charts the ups and downs of the author’s love life and social relationships in an unfamiliar setting. At another, it describes the frequently painful realities of the life in Cuba after 50 years of Castro’s brand of communism; it tells you a lot that the author even had to drop the diary style and resort to a ‘fictional’ story for the last part of the book in order to protect the anonymity of the people involved.

This book is based on the author’s experiences when he was living in Cuba to perfect his Spanish. Although light-hearted in tone, it provides great insight into the way of life of ordinary Cubans, while at the same time providing a balanced perspective of the reality of this culture and, incidentally, good advice for anyone intending to visit the country.

An unusual but rewarding read.
