On Christmas Eve, whilst all alone he is visited by a ghost named Jacob Marley who had died one Christmas Eve a number of years ago. Jacob, whilst alive was a man similar in character to Ebenezer and  he comes to warn Ebenezer to not be like him or otherwise he will be doomed to be trapped forever as an earthly ghost. Ebenezer encounters a visit from there more ghosts and finally embraces the spiritual meaning behind Christmas.
