The San Francisco Chronicle declared him "one of the most brilliant writers to ever come out of Ireland," and Neil Jordan called Winterwood "the most terrifying book I've ever read." In this chilling and unforgettable novel, Patrick McCabe shows us that nothing-and no one-is ever quite what they seem. Shortlisted for the Irish Book Award for Novel of the Year, Winterwood is a disturbing tale of love, death, and identity from a masterful novelist whose "books are skillful exercises in the macabre and the horrific. It is as though Stephen King had learned how to write" (New York Review of Books).

Too dark and depressing
October 3rd, 2015
Firstly, yes, the writer is talented.. the writing itself is good. Two stars because of that fact- but 1 star is how I felt about it, really. This is not a murder mystery, or thriller nor is it a spooky fun-type frightening book. It's just frightening because the story gets more awful as it goes along. It's about a journalist who goes home to Ireland to research its folktales and songs..he winds up remembering more than he'd ever wanted to, regarding his family and his history-his own personal story is what you don't expect it to be. Unfortunately the reviewer who said this book was "too dark" for them- is right for me also. To me, the main character's tale is depressing, sad, full of despair- inducing personal situations, desires and awarenesses. Frightening, yes-- but not in an interesting way.. More like a very well-written "true crime" story, but again- too dimly lit like a subway bathroom and repellant like a filthy one. I was ice-cold when I finished it, and immediately deleted it from my account. No, not because it offended my religious beliefs or something similar. But simply because it was miserable.
