When Dorothy triumphed over the Wicked Witch of the West in L. Frank Baum's classic tale, we heard only her side of the story. But what about her arch-nemesis, the mysterious Witch? Where did she come from? How did she become so wicked?

Gregory Maguire has created a fantasy world so rich and vivid that we will never look at Oz the same way again.

Everything you need in a book

I lOVE this book. I read it almost yearly and every time I do something else pops up. I really had to push through it the first time and when I finished I thought, maybe I liked it, so I read it again and fell in love. It is fantasy, politics, war, magic, religion, history, romance, adventure, hardship and intrigue.

A tale not for Children

The first third of the book I found very fact I was not happy I had downloaded it - but after Elphaba begins to develop a bit more in terms of character it does draw you in. Politics, prejudices and perceptions all change in the land that we believed was Oz. I am curious enough to read Son of A Witch the next book in the series. But it should come with a warning that there are several mature scenes. As my son asked - Can I read it? I said no.... Why he asks... Inappropriate I answer..... Because of cursing he inquires or Shades of Grey? Shades of Grey..... or in this case green. Enough said :) Still a good read even though some of the scenes seem like they are proving the author has a PhD in English.

Some sort of a biography of the wicked witch of the west and explains how she may seemed wicked to people around her at the time she was portrayed in the wizard of oz.

Not a fan

Until the end, I just didn't feel captivated. This was a lot darker of a novel than I was expecting, and u fortunately, I do not plan on reading the other books in the series.
