Synopsis

After serving out a year of hard labor in the salt mines of Endovier for her crimes, 18-year-old assassin Celaena Sardothien is dragged before the Crown Prince. Prince Dorian offers her her freedom on one condition: she must act as his champion in a competition to find a new royal assassin.

Her opponents are men-thieves and assassins and warriors from across the empire, each sponsored by a member of the king's council. If she beats her opponents in a series of eliminations, she'll serve the kingdom for three years and then be granted her freedom.

Celaena finds her training sessions with the captain of the guard, Westfall, challenging and exhilirating. But she's bored stiff by court life. Things get a little more interesting when the prince starts to show interest in her... but it's the gruff Captain Westfall who seems to understand her best.

Then one of the other contestants turns up dead... quickly followed by another. Can Celaena figure out who the killer is before she becomes a victim? As the young assassin investigates, her search leads her to discover a greater destiny than she could possibly have imagined.

Could be better...

The writing is very easy to read, and I did like some of the characters. However, the main character was very annoying and there were many plot holes, making me not care much about the story. It felt like the author was trying really hard to force an interesting story. I could not connect to it at all. The book isn't for me, although many people do like it, so it is worth a try.

Epic read!
October 10th, 2015
This is my first high fantasy novel, and may I just say, it was absolutely amazing! I sped through this. The protagonist is beautifully developed. I also think that this unusual magical touch makes the world feel so real. Recommended to all- I came to this series from a light sci-fi and contemporary marathon!

Beautiful writing
September 5th, 2015
I didn’t have a lot of expectations when I started reading this book and even though I had heard a lot of great stuff about it, I tried not to get affected by that. I also had no idea what the book was about when I began, except that the main character was an assassin. Towards the end of the book, I was really happy that I had not read the synopsis or any reviews of the book since that made it more exciting in a way. Overall, I think this book is really good and it’s definitely worth reading. I can also see why it’s such a popular series. However, I did find it to be a bit slow at times. There wasn’t really a lot of things going on and most pages seemed to me nothing but beautiful descriptions of everything from falling leaves to starlit skies. But Sarah J. Maas’ beautiful writing is also what makes it all worth it, and even if I felt like I wanted more twists and turns and action, her writing made me keep reading all the way to the end. It wasn’t one of those books I struggled to put down and I never felt like I just had to keep reading because I was so eager to know what was going to happen, which is a bit disappointing. I haven’t read one of those books in a very long time and I wanted this to be like that. This was a book I enjoyed reading because of the writing style and the way Sarah J. Maas can make magic with her words. The main character Celeana is fun and strong and I like her. Still, I think she sometimes is a bit too weak and whiny though. I get why a young woman would be like that, but the most famous assassin? Not so much. So, this is a book I can highly recommend for anyone to read. It’s masterfully written, had an interesting plot and great characters.

Great new series :)
August 24th, 2015
I'll be honest: I was a bit surprised by how LONG this book was, but having finished it via happy reading marathon, I can't say that I'm complaining (well, too much, anyway). Maas is very clearly writing a fantasy epic at a YA reading level, and I'm into it. I'm also (obvs) into such a kick-ass main character, all the hints of magic, and (can't help it) the love triangle to come. Looking forward to the second book :)

Throne of Glass has to be hands down my favourite series that I'm currently reading. Celaena is not a damsel in distress which I love. This girl can handle her own but also has a bit of a soft side as well. If you love adventure, fantasy and a touch of romance, I say read this series.

Very nice
December 25th, 2014
Romance and Killing I would say this is more of a 3 and 1/2 stars. Almost a 4.The thing I enjoyed the most about this book was not the good fight scenes, or magic or slow building mystery, or kickass female lead character...but the budding triangle. And I hate that sort of thing. Why I enjoy it this time is that I felt the strongest point of the book was the characters and their development. None were flat or too predictable. They had distinct personalities and all pretty likable. And importantly....their actions and reactions make sense and don't feel forced. I enjoyed all of their interactions. So I find myself rooting for all of them. All of their interactions were interesting and never boring. I look forward to future books and how they develop as well as discovering more about Celaena and her history and importance in the fight for the future of the kingdom coming. The next Major point for me was Celaena herself. I like that she was this trained killer, and very hard due to her life experiences, but she also had this vulnerability about her that made her relatable. Sometimes in the quest to create this tough, badass female character...the character is made too hard. Like steel...and kind of become removed from the reader. I like that she still had this part of her that like pretty dresses and a good looking face, and who was damaged and made mistakes, and sometimes wanted to run and hide and quit…she wasn’t not perfect...they all made for an interestin

I read the summary and knew this was the right book for me. Once I downloaded it I read it nonstop and finished in less than 5 hours. It's a great book for people who like books about girls dominating and older setting from medieval times. This book has some very descriptive parts and it draws my into the book like I'm actually there. I loved it

I simply loved this book. It captivated me and I struggled to put it down. It has a great storyline and I am fascinated by Celeana and her past, present and future. Sarah J Maas is a wonderful author with a natural talent for wording and keeping the story interesting. I cannot wait for the other books to follow and even try to top this already high standard! :D

I do not know why I waited so long to read Throne of Glass by Sarah Maas. I really don’t…But regardless, I picked it up last week and it was all I could think about. At first, I was expecting something a little like The Hunger Games but in a different period. It’s not really like that though. I’m glad to say it’s completely different. At least to me it was. Celaena Sardothien is a tough kick butt heroine. Trained to be an assassin since she was eight years old by the King of Assassins, she has learned a lot. Now she is an eighteen year old who is smart, caring, a little arrogant…well no scratch that she is really arrogant about her skills and reputation as an assassin. After being imprisoned in the salt mines of Endovier for a year, Dorian Havilliard, Crown Prince of Adarlan gives her a way for her to earn her freedom… Out of 23 competitors, Celaena is the only woman in the bunch. But of course she doesn’t find that the least bit intimidating. Though she is confident in what she can do, the competition is far from a cakewalk even for someone like Celaena and soon people start ending up dead. Worried not only about her safety, but those of her friends and people, she realizes that she must do whatever it takes to stop the evil that’s begun all while fighting to become the King’s Champion. Some of my favorite scenes include Dorian and Celaena. They have such witty banter. These two could argue/talk all day and I would never tire of it. There chemistry is great. I’m secretly hoping that they get together in the end. I kept telling myself just one more chapter, one more chapter. I was so enthralled by the story that I quickly lost track of time and before I knew it, it was 4 in the morning. I haven’t gotten that into a book in forever. The pace of the story was good and there is plenty of action, adventure, deception, and solid characters that kept me more than a little entertained. I. Loved. It. Now I am on to the second book, to discover what happens next. If you enjoy fantasy or historical fiction with some action/adventure than I would definitely recommend this book in an instant.

I really enjoyed Throne of Glass. It has been the sort of book that I have recommended to all my friends. Throne of Glass has an entertaining and intriguing plot, that includes assassin's, magic and twisted plans. One of the things that I really enjoyed was the world building. Maas built a rich, colourful and imaginative world. The character's were really well written, I liked that at times you would question Celaena's morals. I also think that the romance was really well written, with both love interests having their likable traits, but also some flaws. There was plenty of action throughout the story, which was fast paced and gripping. The only negative that I have, was that I found it confusing sometimes as to who's perspective the story was coming from, particularly when the first change of perspective happened. Overall though, Throne of Glass is a great book, with plenty of action and a smidge of romance!

An assassin is given the chance to fight for the corrupt king who imprisoned her. Is fighting for him worth escaping a death prison? Filled with intrigue, action, and plot twists, this was an engaging read that I could hardly put down! Highly recommended if you like quick paced, adventuresome books with a dash of romance (not with the evil and disgusting king ;).

This book turned out way better than I thought it would! Initially I was turned off by the cover - cheesey! - and by Caelena's attitude - too cocky and arrogant for me to want to continue reading. But I'm glad I gave it a chance, because once I got into the story a bit more, the whole experience was great! I haven't read many fantasy novels, so this had just the right amount of magic for me not to get lost. I also really enjoyed Caelena's developing relationships with Dorian, Chaol, and Nehemia, and I'm looking forward to reading more. If you're not completely turned off by love triangles and enjoy traveling to new worlds where magic is forbidden and real, then this book comes with my recommendation - just ignore the cover and the unpronouncable names!

The first few chapters are thrilling and capture your interest in the heroine and the battles she will be fighting. But then it took 99 pages to get her dressed and into the arena for practice which left me annoyed. I haven't finished but I want to read the 2nd novel for the romance factor. I hope itcis not as tedious.

An excellent book! I must say I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book! I highly recommend it! I also bought and read The Crown of Midnight, the second book in this series, and was totally blown away! I was thrilled and just as overcome as Chaol to discover Celaena's true identity. I was mystified by the relationships between Prince Dorian, Chaol, and Celaena wondering how it was all going to play out and was so happy with the outcome. Furthermore, in spite of the trials and evil assignments given to her by those who sought to control Celaena, she remained strong and was still capable of loving someone very deeply. I was overcome with the depth of mourning she suffered for the loss of those she loved and yet she was still capable of finding love in her heart again. I am looking forward to reading the next in this series with great anticipation!
