Synopsis

New York Times bestselling author Paula Brackston transports readers to the windswept mountains of Wales in The Winter Witch, an enthralling tale of love and magic.

In her small early nineteenth century Welsh town, there is no one quite like Morgana. She is small and quick and pretty enough to attract a suitor, but there are things that set her apart from other girls. Though her mind is sharp she has not spoken since she was a young girl. Her silence is a mystery, as well as her magic—the household objects that seem to move at her command, the bad luck that visits those who do her ill. Concerned for her safety, her mother is anxious to see Morgana married, and Cai Jenkins, the widowed drover from the far hills who knows nothing of the rumors that swirl around her, seems the best choice.

After her wedding, Morgana is heartbroken at leaving her mother, and wary of this man, whom she does not know, and who will take her away to begin a new life. But she soon falls in love with Cai's farm and the wild mountains that surround it. Here, where frail humans are at the mercy of the elements, she thrives, her wild nature and her magic blossoming. Cai works to understand the beautiful, half-tamed creature he has chosen for a bride, and slowly, he begins to win Morgana's affections. It's not long, however, before her strangeness begins to be remarked upon in her new village. A dark force is at work there—a person who will stop at nothing to turn the townspeople against Morgana, even at the expense of those closest to her. Forced to defend her home, her man, and herself from all comers, Morgana must learn to harness her power, or she will lose everything in this beautifully written, enchanting novel.

I am bewitched. The pages turn with increased speed as I cannot wait to find out what happens. I can feel the warmth of the hearth and the bitter cold of the desolate but beautiful Welsh landscape. The characters are flesh and blood, the writing eloquent and precise.

I don't usually read this type of book however this one caught my eye and I thought I'd give it a try. The story was good and kept my interest. The only thing I thought could have been improved on was the ending. I thought it was rushed as if the author was in a hurry to finish.

Would like to see this as a movie. A little romance. A little suspense. A well written ending. Except maybe a volume 2.

Descriptive, imaginative and compelling. A young, speechless witch overcomes a host of tragedies in an effort to save her husband, herself and her home. I would have given it five stars, but in a section of the book, it got to be a bit much as far as evil doings are concerned.

Excellent Book!
February 24th, 2014
This was a really wonderful book to read. The characterizations are very strong and well done. The descriptions of the area are enjoyable, never tedious, and make you feel you could almost see what is described. They are never tedious or overdone. The suspense builds nicely through the story and is resolved in a satisfactory manner. The writing style if the author is Overall, I truly enjoyed this book from page one through the last word. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I did!

A Tender Story
February 6th, 2014
A beautifully written tale for adults. I've never read a story set in Wales before and this one went a long ways to describing what life in the early to mid 1800's would be like, especially in understanding how communities would view outsiders.

Enchanting
October 2nd, 2013
I cant say how wonderful and lovely that story was. A page turner and beautifully written. Sometimes I did not understand the language but it wasnt a really problem. All I know was that my heart beat with the tale of love, power, loss and heartache. It filled me so. I cant say the story will touch everyone but if you are one of those lucky few. I bid you happy reading!
