Synopsis

In The Way of Kings, #1 New York Times bestselling author Brandon Sanderson introduces readers to the fascinating world of Roshar, a world of stone and storms.
It has been centuries since the fall of the Knights Radiant, but their mystical swords and armor remain, transforming ordinary men into near-invincible warriors. Men trade kingdoms for them. Wars are fought for them and won by them.
One such war rages on the Shattered Plains where Kaladin, son of a surgeon, has been reduced to slavery, and Dalinar, commander of the armies, is plagued by dreams of ancient times, doubting his own sanity.
Across the ocean, Shallan, a naïve but brave and brilliant young woman, plans a daring theft to save her impoverished noble house from ruin.
The result of over ten years of planning, writing, and world-building, The Way of Kings is Book 1 of The Stormlight Archive, an epic fantasy masterpiece in the making.

Amazing Read!

Best fantasy read in a while. Highly recommended. Tempo never breaks and even the most avid fantasy readers will find it hard to compare to most others in this genre.

Sanderson has created a fully realized world with an incredible amount of depth and character. Has mostly done away with popular fantasy tropes, giving readers a unique story unlike anything else I have read. Looking forward to book 2!

The Way of Kings

I started this book with the intention of finding something to pass the time in waiting for the next book in George R.R. Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" series. Now I have a new favourite author and series of novels to look forward to! This book certainly exceeded my expectations. It is definitely one of the best modern fantasy novels, and, if Sanderson plays his cards right, "The Stormlight Archive" can -- rather, WILL -- go down in history as one of fantasy's greats. Interestingly dimensional characters, a creative world, and a stellar plot are just some of the book's many features. An absolute must read for any sci-fi / fantasy lovers. 4.7/5.

This book is long. Very long. But its just terrific. It can drag a bit here and there but once the story is moving it just keeps getting better. Highly recommend.

Overall a good book but WAY too long. I also wasn't able to connect the two separate plots...I'm sure it will come clearer in the next book. Lots of action and intrigue...too much, in fact. Not sure if I will continue with this series.

Fantastic, a true masterpiece.
May 7th, 2014
Brandon Sanderson drags you into the story, bringing the devastation and beauty of a dying world alive in your mind. His characters are everything you've come to expect from a writer of his calibre and more, it has been a long while since a writer has made me feel so strongly for his characters, connecting with them in ways I thought I wouldn't find again after The Wheel Of Time saga. He takes the time and effort to bring his characters and story to life within you, without creating boredom or a slowing in the story just for detail. If I had to describe this book in a single word, it would simply be; Masterpiece. Few stories can compare to the sheer scope of vision this does. I cannot continue writing this review, as I must simply jump back into this new standard of novel. I sincerely doubt anything I read again will compare. ( except the rest of this series )

I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Brandon Sanderson is incredibly creative in the word he builds, one that is in so many ways completely different from the standards of fantasy we've come to expect. If you're looking for a thrilling, intricate, unexpected world to explore, this series is for you.

An amazing start to a new series. Brandon's ability to come up with new ideas in a field choked with regurgitated garbage is unparalleled. Easily my favourite new author. Once You pick up one of his books clear your schedule....your not putting it down until it is complete.

This book takes a while to get going, but once it does you'll be glad you stuck with it. As usual with Sanderson, the real strength is his interesting magic system. Similar to the Mistborn series, the author brings a fresh new way of using magic to allow characters to perform amazing feats. The story focuses on three main characters, who are eventually drawn together in a fantastic climax which sets up the story nicely for book two. Well worth a read.

Sanderson, perhaps best known for completing Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time Saga, proves that his talents are not isolated to that series. The Way of Kings is a freshly original and exciting fantasy that leaves the reader looking forward to the next novel. The book outlines the struggles, across a vast land intricately described by Sanderson, of three sharply different people to find their own way in a dangerous world. Adventure, betrayal, death, life, love and secrets, This book has everything the discerning fantasy reader could desire. Highly recommended.

Excellent beginning to what promises to be the next big epic fantasy series. A world populated by regular hurricane type storms, huge crustaceans, weapons and armor make one nearly unbeatable and fully developed characters. All this wrapped in Sanderson's masterful story telling. He can bring you to tears, evoke a belly laugh or make your breath catch with excitement all in a well paced, well told story. What's not to love?

Brandon Sanderson is probably my favorite author right now. Everything he writes is creative, engaging, and I find has a flow and rythm that is hard to put down. The way of kings, however, is probably my favorite of all his work. I cannot wait for "Words Of Radiance" to be released. This is the beginning of what I'm sure will become my favorite multi-volume saga.
