London, 1861. Sir Richard Francis Burton - explorer, linguist, scholar, and swordsman; his reputation tarnished; his career in tatters; his former partner missing and probably dead. Algernon Charles Swinburne - unsuccessful poet and follower of de Sade, for whom pain is pleasure, and brandy is ruin! Their investigations lead them to one of the defining events of the age, and the terrifying possibility that the world they inhabit shouldn't exist at all!

This book seems to have it all: intricate plot, clever witticisms, rich historical detail (though completely perverted from the real Victorian timeline for the author's own diabolical fun), detective's, adventurers, poets and monsters. I couldn't put it down and I am eager to see what this wonderfully bastardized version of Sir Richard Burton and Algernon Swinburne get up to next. I was a bit shocked by some of my favorite and most beloved historical heroes being cast as villains (and their positions being misrepresented) in this story, but I took it with a grain of salt and enjoyed the story for what it was. Besides, considering what events are changed in the story from our original history, who can say how our heros may have changed.
