Quentin Coldwater is brilliant but miserable. A high school math genius, he’s secretly fascinated with a series of children’s fantasy novels set in a magical land called Fillory, and real life is disappointing by comparison. When Quentin is unexpectedly admitted to an elite, secret college of magic, it looks like his wildest dreams have come true. But his newfound powers lead him down a rabbit hole of hedonism and disillusionment, and ultimately to the dark secret behind the story of Fillory. The land of his childhood fantasies turns out to be much darker and more dangerous than he ever could have imagined. . . .

The prequel to the New York Times bestselling book The Magician King and the #1 bestseller The Magician's Land, The Magicians is one of the most daring and inventive works of literary fantasy in years. No one who has escaped into the worlds of Narnia and Harry Potter should miss this breathtaking return to the landscape of the imagination.

Fantastic magical ride for adults
June 11th, 2015
I have read the whole series now, it is one of the best magical stories I have read in a long time. It is an adult story, a combination of Narnia and Harry Potter, the characters are realistic, the magical characters are what you have come to expect, from reading fairy tales and other magical children's stories. But let me be clear, these books are definately for adults!

Pretty good read. Quite long. Has a backstory ripped right from chronicles of Narnia. Worth the $3 I paid.

The Magicians

Lacking depth. Skim read it, nothing within to hold your attention. Main character that you can't get into, and written as a parody to Harry Potter and Narnia, with blatant references throughout. Might only read others in the series if I get at a used book store for a couple bucks. Maybe.

Good in theory but not actually good
October 23rd, 2013
A good premise, a decent start with some interesting twists but then it bogs down. The main character 's woes me attitude grinds. Some good action at the end but ultimately glad it's over. Never a good sign to look forward to finishing a book.

A fantastic journey
March 25th, 2013
I don't know truly what I was expecting from this book but in the end I feel like I've taken some sort of fantastic journey. But keep in mind that fantastic does not always means good. I didn't connect with the main character until toward the end of the novel a there were definitely certain moments that stunned me. My initial reaction to Fillory was one of surprise as the initial description reminded me of Narnia but in the end was quite amazing and different. The detail in this novel is wonderful.
