Synopsis

The book no one can stop talking about . . . In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by twelve outlying districts. The Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the districts in line by forcing them all to send one boy and one girl between the ages of twelve and eighteen to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV. Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who lives alone with her mother and younger sister, regards it as a death sentence when she is forced to represent her district in the Games. But Katniss has been close to dead and survival, for her, is second nature. Without really meaning to, she becomes a contender. But if she is to win, she will have to start making choices that weigh survival against humanity and life against love. New York Times bestselling author Suzanne Collins delivers equal parts suspense and philosophy, adventure and romance, in this searing novel set in a future with unsettling parallels to our present.

I have watched the movie AND read the books and i absolutely love it. One thing though, Katniss and Gail look much better together than Katniss and Peeta yet they marry and have kids. What's up with that? Peeta is KA-RAY-ZEE!!!

Full of sacrifice and moving love
December 26th, 2015
I read and finshed this book in Gr. 4. Its been a year since i first started reading. I finished the series about 3 or 4 times, already. This book is generaly about sacrific and love, fighting for peace and hope. In the behginning, we litsen to our character, Katniss Evedeen talks about jer life in the seam. The hunger games, they were created when 13 district rebelled, obviously for freedom. The capitol won, 12 defeated, 0ne expelled and extinct, which is district 13. You'll get information about 13 in the second and third book. Anyhoo, The Hunger Games is a "game" that the districts "play" each year, every district offers one boy and one girl to fight to the death in the arena. You'll have tread more to understand.

One of my favourite series. Following the adventures of Katniss as she ends up having to fight for her life after saving her sister from her fate. While she isn't perfect, it's what makes Katniss a great character.

I LOVE this book series more than anything else in the world! I am so obsessed with it I can't stop thinking about it! Suzanne Collins takes us to another world and let's us feel like we are living in it. She makes us cry,she makes us scream with joy (or frustration.) But in the end we all enjoy the books and recommend it to other people and just become amazed with it. Thank you Suzanne Collins for writing this amazing, awesome, breath taking book series!

Devoured all three books in the series. Loved the characters, loved the story line. Found it difficult to find another book to read after I finished the series because nothing held my interest the way these books did. Just started reading them for the second time and they are just as good as the first time was.

They are beaten, not broken
April 8th, 2015
As reviewed on KayFrayBooks Obviously, a great deal has already been said about The Hunger Games. I’m sure that every aspect of the book has been picked apart, examined, and analyzed. I am not a literary expert. The closest I have come to studying literature is a few college courses required for graduation and an unhealthy addiction to reading. This book sat in my to-be-read pile for quite some time. It was a gift from my sister-in-law, and really just didn’t appeal to me. It wasn’t until my husband read it while we were on vacation, and loved it, that I decided to give it a chance. My husband does not enjoy reading. In the 10 years that we have been together, I have seen him read 7 books; three of which are the Hunger Games Trilogy. So, for it to hold his interest and then get a thumbs up, I knew it had to be something special. It was. The writing is simple without being juvenile. That is a trick not mastered by most who write YA novels from the first person point of view. It has to be descriptive enough to pull you in, but simple enough that it is believable to have it coming from the mind of Katniss. You could feel how dismal and depressing the districts were. But you also saw their culture, and the ways that they have managed to find joy. They are beaten, not broken, and that is perhaps the most important distinction one can make about The Hunger Games.

Catchy and intriguing title
April 4th, 2015
While the book was well written and often suspenseful, it was extremely violent and depressing in content. The post apocalypse world is controlled by madmen who demand the deaths of 23 young people per year to control the loyalty of the population. The sacrifice of the youths is presented as a game that has handlers and support staff not unlike what a modern beauty pageant has. The underlying paranoia of government in our society is exaggerated to create the conflict in the story. The attendant love story gets awkward at times and I found myself frustrated with the protagonists. Overall, the book has merit as social commentary and entertainment for those who can tolerate what seems like gratuitous violence.

Boring!
February 1st, 2015
Not only is this story excruciatingly boring (because it is, in fact, a snooze-worthy novel to try to read), but it is so terrible in subject matter that this is darker than any horror story ever made. When you give your child a copy of this book, you are giving them a story where kids get in an arena and kill one another for the entertainment of the adults in the world. It's not just bad, it's sick! How did this ever make it past the censors?

Sorry haters, this is a great read.
November 13th, 2014
This is an entertaining, and thrilling read. The world that Collins' lays out is dark, intriguing, morbid, and in-depth enough that as you read, you want to know more about it. While there may be some holes in the mythology that Collins' has created, one thing is undeniable; Collins' has crafted a real page-turner. The way that she moves the story is incredible, and she manages to jam-pack all these interesting tidbits into the story that question characters' motives, and push you to keep reading so you can find out what will happen. Many, many, many times in The Hunger Games, you can almost hear a literary gasp coming from off the page. I started reading this book, and within a week, I had finished the entire trilogy. Once you start, you have to finish it. And you will.

So much better than the movie
November 12th, 2014
When I watched the movie for this book first, I was so dissapointed and didn't realize what the big deal was. Till I picked up the book and read it. It truly is hard to put down once you get into it. The character development is much stronger and the motives behinds the character's actions are made much clearer. I would recommend this to anyone who has watched the movie but feels disappointed.

Great Female Role model
November 11th, 2014
Katniss everdeen is badass. I remember when the hype of this book was in full throttle. I couldn't understand what this big fuzz was all about. Now a lot of people know the story of the brave young lady that grew up in a very despaired society, who loved her family and would do anything for it. In a post apocalyptic world, where "states" are divided into districts in the country of Panem, children between the ages of 12 and 18 are sent in a pageant of "honour" and "valour", fighting to their death. It's a story of social guidelines, repression, family, love, politics...all hidden in what appears to be a simple YA book. Couldn't put it down.

Riveting read!
May 7th, 2014
The book is every bit, and even more so, riveting, intriguing, entertaining and breathtaking as the film. It's amazing how accurately Katniss was portrayed in the film. She's a complex character; feels real and familiar. The setting and background is subtly but deftly revealed throughout the story. Far from disappointing after seeing the film first, it revealed the story from a different angle... I finished the book in two sittings reading through the night!

I would like to say I loved the book that would be a lie. The outlook into the future is dark and dismal although in a way it could be compared to the draft and previous wars. You shouldn't watch the movie unless you read the book and the reverse is true also. I forced myself to finish the first time and was better prepared the second. I think you would be safer in District 13.

Reading the book after watching the movie made me realize how well they did with the movie. I was able to visualize the scenarios as they evolved. The book was fluid in its writing, and an easy read. I am now anxious to begin book 2 and then see the movie to satisfy myself that Hollywood did not mess it up. I would recommend this to anyone enjoying this genre, and I recommend, to myself, any other books written by this author..Thank you for the read!!!

I loved the film and loved the book more. Although the films don't actually leave a lot out of the book, the books do fill in the gaps that the move left out. I really did find the book hard to put down once I started to read it. I found the relationship between Katniss and Peeta fascinating as it developed through the book and enjoyed how it's written entirely from Katniss's point of view and her internal dialogue really do develop her character and why she is how she is. If you liked the film (or haven't seen it) and like to read then you will enjoy this book!

December 19th, 2013
I think the story is really good. Yes, it jas the clichéd love triangle, but it goes much deeper than that. The love triangle plot, however, makes it easily relatable. The story goes further to include the repression of the a dictator president and the full force of the presidents ability to rule with a harsh hand. The writing can sometimes seem childish, geared towards a younger generation, but over all, a great book for a wide range of ages and audience.

Narrative decisions seem brash and offer little development into relationships between characters. The imagined futuristic world lacks depth in comparison to other dystopian narratives of similar report. Unfortunately, the trajectory of the story plays out as expected from start to finish with few surprises for a seasoned reader. Luckily, narratives which follow well traveled paths provide pleasure to readers as affirmation of morality which has translated into the success of this book. A great quick read but do not expect to leave this world any different then when you entered.
