Ben Graham is convinced his mother is hiding something. He knows that Los Angeles in 2037 is full of riots and gangs, which is why Ben and his three siblings are never allowed outside their apartment building. But lately he's become suspicious of their mother's reluctance to talk about their past. Just as Ben decides to run away, their mother is kidnapped. Fourteen-year-old Ben must now find the courage to lead his younger brother and two sisters through the riotous streets of Los Angeles in a quest not only to find their mother, but to find out why she has been taken hostage for something she stole over a decade ago.

Sucked into the world of gangs their mother tried so desperately to protect them from, Ben and his siblings discover that their mother is not an overworked secretary struggling to pay the rent, but a world famous scientist running from justice. She has stolen the most valuable piece of medical technology in the world, and has been trying to keep it out of the hands of both her former boss and the mythical tribe that claims to own what might in fact be the fountain of youth.

But why would she want to hide something that could save millions of lives? Caught between the technological chaos of a near-future Los Angeles and the remote forests of South America, Ben must find a way to simultaneously reunite his family and restore justice to a world full of staggering greed, futuristic technology, and apocalyptic conspiracy theories.
