Synopsis

When South African conservationist Lawrence Anthony was asked to accept a herd of "rogue" wild elephants on his Thula Thula game reserve in Zululand, his common sense told him to refuse. But he was the herd's last chance of survival: they would be killed if he wouldn't take them.

In order to save their lives, Anthony took them in. In the years that followed he became a part of their family. And as he battled to create a bond with the elephants, he came to realize that they had a great deal to teach him about life, loyalty, and freedom.

The Elephant Whisperer is a heartwarming, exciting, funny, and sometimes sad account of Anthony's experiences with these huge yet sympathetic creatures. Set against the background of life on an African game reserve, with unforgettable characters and exotic wildlife, it is a delightful book that will appeal to animal lovers and adventurous souls everywhere.

A refreshing look at the reality of wild elephants. Shows their intelligence but takes them out of the perceived innocence of circus animals.

Bathe in the wonder of the African wilderness

The author brilliantly describes his love affair with the African wilderness, it's inhabitants, his family and his life's work. I was swept up by the adventure of their lives. Bowled over by the richness and depth of his connection to the elephant kingdom. And I am totally drawn to the awesomeness of the land he describes as his home. I may visit some day, God willing.

Amazing read. Very exciting and emotional. I would recommend to anyone with a kind heart or an old soul. Lawrence really captures the heart and truth of the African continent and paints his story of wildlife preservation and acceptance by a herd of rouge elephants. It will make you laugh cry and want to take a trip into the wild.

This is definitely one of the must read books. It's quite amazing looking at Lawrence Anthony's life and his connection with the wild elephants. Makes us realize that there are more to animals than what has been discovered by science so far.

I really enjoyed this book, not just for the central story about the elephant herd but also because the cultural context and an people stories are very interesting too (Zulu and Sth African culture). It is easy to read. The author lays out his story in a straightforward manner without much finess. However you don't really notice this as the story is so interesting.

A truly great read and insightful in the lives of elephants and of those caring for them. I had never thought about attempting to understand their lives, feelings and emotions - sad in some parts but never boring. Understanding the animals would give us greater knowledge of understanding humankind. I wish others who have the chance to experience what he did share there stories.

one of the best reads in a long time about conservation and conservationist. It was easy to read yet not boring. It covered a lifestyle in Africa that is quietly achieving what all wild life animal warriors want to see happen, yet at the same time running a working property. A very fine balance of work, life and conservation.
