Synopsis

"These dedicated men and women gave blood, sweat, and tears as their contribution - And now, it really happened, our beloved bird was in the air." - Ray Boone, A.V. Roe Canada employee. In the 1950s, A. V. Roe Canada was at the forefront of aviation development worldwide. After building one of the first jet airliners and completing production of Canada's first jet fighter, the company was poised to launch its most revolutionary design - the Avro Arrow. Despite the efforts of courageous test pilots and some of the world's best designers, engineers, and technicians, the dream was shattered.

This is a very interesting account of the rise and fall of the Avro Arrow. One of the most exciting and beautiful planes ever built, it was far ahead of it's time in speed, performance and handling. Only a few people grasped it's potential, however, and sadly the project was terminated by the Diefenbaker government. Thousands were thrown out of work at the giant Avro plant overnight. Even the completed aircraft were cut up for scrap. This book is a well narrated description of a very exciting period of Canadian history when for a moment, we were at the forefront of flight!
