Synopsis

The #1 New York Times–bestselling sequel to A Discovery of Witches—“as enchanting, engrossing, and impossible to put down as its predecessor” (Miami Herald)

J. K. Rowling, Stephenie Meyer, Anne Rice—only a few writers capture the imagination the way that Deborah Harkness has with her New York Times–bestselling All Souls trilogy. A Discovery of Witches introduces reluctant witch Diana Bishop, vampire geneticist Matthew Clairmont, and the battle for a lost, enchanted manuscript known as Ashmole 782.

Picking up from A Discovery of Witches’ cliffhanger ending, Shadow of Night takes Diana and Matthew on a trip through time to Elizabethan London, where they are plunged into a world of spies, magic, and a coterie of Matthew’s old friends, the School of Night. As the search for Ashmole 782 deepens and Diana seeks out a witch to tutor her in magic, the net of Matthew’s past tightens around them, and they embark on a very different—and vastly more dangerous—journey.

The Book of Life, the much-anticipated conclusion to the All Souls trilogy, will be published by Viking in July 2014.

Just ok.

Wow, goes on forever. I like the story but the author has a tendency to use filler just to drag out the story, obviously paid by the word!

Second Times a Charm
October 15th, 2014
Just finished reading this book for the second time, finding it more enjoyable this time around. The first time reading I felt overwhelmed with all the new characters thrust upon me at once and didn't enjoy some of the historical references and details so much. This time it wasn't so bad. Cannot wait to read the third book!

I loved this sequel. The main character is a strong female, the premise is quite unusual and I can't wait to read Harkness's third novel in the series.

Shadow of the Night was a very good installment in the lives of Diana and Matthew. I liked the character development, good twists and turns to the story. The travel back in time was well done, descriptive and made the reader feel you were possibly there. I am looking forward to the third chapter in their lives and to see what the future holds for them. Deborah Harkness is a good author, well written book, definitely worth a read.

I really enjoyed this second installment in The All-Souls Trilogy. The characters are well written as is the story. I love the drama, suspense, intrigue, romance and magic. Read A Discovery of Witches first.

I found the first book a lot more exciting. The first few chapters in this book were all about history. I really had to force myself to get past all the American history lesson to get to the heart of the story! I did however love meeting some characters that you hear so much about in the first book( wont name names, don't want to spoil anything) Decent book but hoping for a lot more adventure in the third!

I love how Harkness takes the time to go into genetic and historical detail. Her plot becomes that much more unique because of those elements.

Wow - it was probably one of the most wonderfully complex, layered and thought out novel I have read in ages - I have moved it into my top 5 books - along with Elizabeth's Garden, Brunonia Barry's The Lace Reader - I found I read a chapter, and immediately went back and reread the chapter, it was that good - I have left it by my bedside and plan on reading it again - I sat and read this book, all 580 pages in one reading - staying up all night long - I have not done that since my highschool days.....I cannot wait...until 2012 for the second book in the series to come out.

Though sequel books are not always that great.........kind of like sequel movies; this one will not disappoint. If you loved "A Discovery of Witches", you will love this book as well. The story of the main characters continues to unfold, only this time in the past! Tons of fun and you will hate to put this book down.
