Synopsis

When Kate, single mother and law firm partner, gets an urgent phone call summoning her to her daughter's exclusive private school, she's shocked. Amelia has been suspended for cheating, something that would be completely out of character for her over-achieving, well-behaved daughter.

Kate rushes to Grace Hall, but what she finds when she finally arrives is beyond comprehension.

Her daughter Amelia is dead.

Despondent over having been caught cheating, Amelia has jumped from the school's roof in an act of impulsive suicide. At least that's the story Grace Hall and the police tell Kate. In a state of shock and overcome by grief, Kate tries to come to grips with this life-shattering news. Then she gets an anonymous text:

Amelia didn't jump.

The moment she sees that message, Kate knows in her heart it's true. Clearly Amelia had secrets, and a life Kate knew nothing about. Wracked by guilt, Kate is determined to find out what those secrets were and who could have hated her daughter enough to kill. She searches through Amelia's e-mails, texts, and Facebook updates, piecing together the last troubled days of her daughter's life.

Reconstructing Amelia is a stunning debut page-turner that brilliantly explores the secret world of teenagers, their clandestine first loves, hidden friendships, and the dangerous cruelty that can spill over into acts of terrible betrayal.

Engaging storyline. Quick read.
June 26th, 2015
My first impression of Reconstructing Amelia was that it reminded me of Gossip Girl, because of the anonymously authored blog and the private school, set in New York. It also reminded me of Law and Order: SVU. Although the changes in the timeline threw me off initially I did adjust to it. The formatting with the blog posts, text messages, emails and Facebook statuses helped to keep the story current. I think this will be appealing to many readers. It also helps to move along the story, making for a quick read.

The mystery of the story line holds you to the end. The characters were believable. Be prepared to read texting. Most I knew some I didn't but it did not effect the reading of the plot line.

One of the best books I've read in a long time. The issues raised are a sad part of our children's reality. Still, the way McCreight built her story around bullying is going to haunt me for a very long time! I'll miss Amelia although I realize she was just a fictional character! McCreight obviously did her job well to get that kind of reaction by the end of the story.

Reconstructing Amelia - A Novel
July 21st, 2014
I enjoyed it a lot. I know Secret Societies exist in Universities and many other types of Organizations. I can believe that the hazing that has been described in this book is probably quite tame compared to some extreme Society initiations such as The Skulls andor the Mason's. Why else would they go to such lengths to maintain their secrets!

What we think we know....
May 3rd, 2014
This book is an amazing journey into the life of a teenager who, on the surface, appears to be healthy, happy and well adjusted. Under the surface lurks all the deepest, darkest secrets of adolescence. Wanting to belong, the journey of discovering sexuality, peer pressure, bullying and the power of social media in a teenager's life. What we think we know about our children isn't who they really are. It's a real head's up about just how sophisticated and complicated the life and times of a teenager in this era really is.

Not really sure what to say. There were definite highs but I never felt connected to the storyline. I do think the way the author chose to illustrate the teen dialogue was a current and correct choice.

This book was really intriguing. It was a gripping story that follows Kate as she tries to uncover the truth behind the death of her daughter, Amelia. The story goes back and forth between Kate and Amelia and between the past and the present. No one knows the truth…everyone has something to hide. Some of the twists were predictable and others were not; the ending had me surprised. It was sickening to watching how cruel the Maggies and others were to Amelia. Sadly, this kind of bullying/hazing happens. This was a heavy read and one that I’m happy I did.

I really enjoyed this book. I have two teenagers and see how easily it is to get pulled into something and have it spiral out of control. The book was written from the point of view of the mother and daughter. I was neat to see two different perspectives.

Fabulous read - devoured it in a couple of days. Told from the perspective of various characters, McCreight masterfully moves between the "here and now" of the story and the events prior to the opening scenes - the reader sees the whole picture unfold easily. The characters are real - both middle aged mom and teen-speak ring true. Emotions too, seem real and valid for the characters. Hard to say much without giving away plot points....but it's a great read and I look forward to more from this author.

I very much enjoyed reading this book. McCreight writes in 'Picoult' style, with chapters alternating between the mother's and daughter's perspectives. The subject matter (Amelia's death) is difficult, and McCreight captures Kate's pain and her emotional struggle to find the truth brilliantly. The story begins on the day of Amelia's death, but spirals out both forward and backward as Kate discovers more and more that she did not know about her daughter. McCreight's portrayal of the reality of social networking, bullying and keeping secrets, as well as her use of writing chapters in Amelia's voice, kept me riveted as the story galloped to its ending - with no shortage of twists and surprises along the way. I highly recommend this book, and look forward to reading more from McCreight.

This is the first suspense/mystery I've read in a long time, and it was such a pleasure read this page-turner. I often couldn't wait to get back to it to see what happened next. The author creatively and effectively bounced between the voice of Kate and Amelia, and even used texts and facebook status updates to tell the story. Not only was this an entertaining read, but made me more aware as the mother of a young daughter of the secret lives to teens... yikes.
