Synopsis

In the year 2044, reality is an ugly place. The only time teenage Wade Watts really feels alive is when he's jacked into the virtual utopia known as the OASIS. Wade's devoted his life to studying the puzzles hidden within this world's digital confines—puzzles that are based on their creator's obsession with the pop culture of decades past and that promise massive power and fortune to whoever can unlock them.
But when Wade stumbles upon the first clue, he finds himself beset by players willing to kill to take this ultimate prize. The race is on, and if Wade's going to survive, he'll have to win—and confront the real world he's always been so desperate to escape.

If so, then you will love this Book! Braiding together what once was, with what is to come is a stroke of brilliance. There are so many references to things back in the 80's that I had totally forgotten. Glad to see that I'm not the only person over 40 who still loves video games & Sci-fi! Geeks & Gunters! Loads of fun
March 27th, 2016
4.5 Stars!!! This was so much fun to read!! It was light-hearted, uplifting and, for someone who was a teenager during the 80s, it was an entertaining blast from the past. The story flowed steadily and held my interest throughout, which I don't experience often. The characters were likeable and, for the most part, well developed. The writing was simple and straightforward, letting the story do the work. I was hesitant to read this because the synopsis never really grabbed me, but the popularity of the book was to great to ignore, so I gave it a go, and I'm glad I did!

Fun Read!
September 14th, 2015
I almost have a love/hate relationship with this book. On one hand, it was a fun read that was full of pop culture references, jokes, and just "fun" things! It went by almost too quickly, and I wanted more. Every page had a little something for everyone. On the other hand, the actual story was... meh? That might not be the right word but I found that when I sat down and thought about it, the story itself was kind of lacking. It felt almost too perfect for the protagonist and everything sort of fell in place. Now don't let that dissuade you! It's still a fun book if you enjoy the culture and a fun read! Just don't take it too seriously.

Fantastic book for anyone who came of age in the 80s... This story is fantastic. It is filled to the brim with references to video games, movies, TV shows and music from the 80's, 90's and beyond. The characters are likeable and interesting and their quest for Halladay's Easter Egg, hidden somewhere within the vast, simulated world called the Oasis, is enthralling from start to finish. I highly recommend it for fans of video games; late, twentieth century, pop culture; science fiction, or all three.

This is a Must read for any "Gamers" out there. 'Ready Player One' begins nearly one century in the future with a fast pace, slightly redundant, review of modern day MMO (multi-player online) gaming, and its ramifications in an over populated world. A brilliant PC video game designer creats an alternate virtual world where peoples of all nations can seek mental refuage from their real world problems. When this famous designer passes away he leaves behind 250 billion dollars as a grand prize to the first person able to "Win" his very last game in a virtual world. This book is special for its lively review of 1980's music, video, fashion and geo poplitical cultures.

4.5 stars It's the 2040s. When the creator of the most popular virtual reality game (the Oasis) in the world dies, he leaves his billions of dollars up for grabs to whoever can find the Easter egg he's hidden in the Oasis first. Teenager Wade (in real life; Parzival in the Oasis) is determined to do everything he can to find that egg. Along the way, he meet and befriends competitors Aech, Art3mis, Daito and Shoto. The five of them are working alone, but it's not easy because they are up against a big corporation that has hired others to find that egg and the billions of dollars up for grabs. Wow, this was so much fun! The creator of the Oasis had a love for everything 1980s, so (having grown up in the 80s myself), I loved all the 80s references – music, movies, tv, etc... I wasn't as much into video games, but those play a big part in this book, as well. I also really liked Wade/Parzival and the other characters. I listened to the audio, which – quite appropriately – was narrated by Wil Wheaton (in fact, Wil Wheaton is even mentioned in the book!). Very very enjoyable book, especially for those of us who grew up in the 80s, as well as any video game/role playing geeks out there!

Ready Player One by Ernest Cline I loved this book. It’s premise of being able to enter the globally networked virtual reality web (OASIS) and control an avatar using electronic sensing devices, is very intriguing. The population in this future, deteriorating world all use OASIS as an escape from terrible lives of rationed energy and few jobs. This is disturbing but quite plausible if the supply of oil ran out and climate change was happening. It is a glimpse into a grim future. In spite of living in the “stacks” –trailers and RV’s mounted in 22 layers above each other, our hero Wade, copes ingeniously with his lack of parents and in having to live with an uncaring aunt and a total of 15 crammed together in one three-bedroom trailer. Throughout the story we catch glimpses of how the world has divided into ‘haves’ and ‘have nots’ and the many hardships in the lives of ordinary people. Our hero, Wade is marginalized – he has no money, no real family since his mother over dosed when he was 11, few friends and is not physically attractive, but somehow we don’t feel sorry for him because he has ingenuity, intelligence and drive. It is admirable that he completes high school via his avatar in spite of the difficulties involved. He is likeable and resourceful. Enter the designer of OASIS who announces a contest called Anorak’s Invitation whose winner receives the dying designer’s entire fortune of two hundred and forty billion dollars. The search for the golden egg becomes Wade’s goal in life and the virtual search drives the rest of the story. Even if the reader is not a “gamer”, the story is fascinating and gripping. I can only imagine how at home a video gamer would be. It’s not easy to finish a chapter and put the book down – the reader always want to read more. Surely this is the mark of a good book!
