Synopsis

A scientist’s case for the afterlife…

Thousands of people have had near-death experiences, but scientists have argued that they are impossible. Dr. Eben Alexander was one of those scientists. A highly trained neurosurgeon, Alexander knew that NDEs feel real, but are simply fantasies produced by brains under extreme stress.

Then, Dr. Alexander’s own brain was attacked by a rare illness. The part of the brain that controls thought and emotion—and in essence makes us human—shut down completely. For seven days he lay in a coma. Then, as his doctors considered stopping treatment, Alexander’s eyes popped open. He had come back.

Alexander’s recovery is a medical miracle. But the real miracle of his story lies elsewhere. While his body lay in coma, Alexander journeyed beyond this world and encountered an angelic being who guided him into the deepest realms of super-physical existence. There he met, and spoke with, the Divine source of the universe itself.

Alexander’s story is not a fantasy. Before he underwent his journey, he could not reconcile his knowledge of neuroscience with any belief in heaven, God, or the soul. Today Alexander is a doctor who believes that true health can be achieved only when we realize that God and the soul are real and that death is not the end of personal existence but only a transition.

This story would be remarkable no matter who it happened to. That it happened to Dr. Alexander makes it revolutionary. No scientist or person of faith will be able to ignore it. Reading it will change your life.

Brought faith and easy in healing after my fathers death. As a scientific mind the "proof" from a scientist allowed for credibility and true belief.

Extremely good read!

Dr. Eben struggles at times to convey his experience and it shows. But who has ever tried to convey something so spiritual and ended up getting their message across visually satisfying? Either way this book and experience couldn't have come from anyone else in my opinion. As a medically minded person myself, he truly has the data and background to support his experience which a lot of NDE's leave me desiring. Thank you for this look and journey.

This book is intriguing because of the author's unique experience, but also because his impeccable credentials and research demonstrate his credibility?

I'm grateful that Eben Alexander wrote this book. Next to The Tibethan Book of Dying it gives such precious amount of information about the proces of death. Very interesting and useful in the same time.

This is an interesting, very personal book. The conviction with which Dr. Alexander writes is admirable, the title of the book is unfortunate in that it doesn't really offer "proof" of heaven. It's a terrific read that should have spent more time on the alternate theories for Dr. Alexander's experience. Speaking from the scientific point of view, the proof would be more convincing if the support were more objective. After reading this book, I went onto "The God Delusion" by Richard Dawkins, another New York Times bestseller and a counterpoint/counterpart to "Proof of Heaven".

Having read a multitude of books on this subject, starting with Raymond Moodys' Life after Life, I was thrilled to see documentation from a neurosurgeons perspective, both professional and personal. I was not disappointed. Dr Alexander answers many of the questions I have had about the physical aspects of the brain and dying. While I have never needed verification, having experienced my own NDE, it is always rewarding to have positive input from the scientific community.

As a Christian and a registered nurse, I was keen to read this book. However, the medical aspect of the book was very technical. It was more then I was able to fully understand. The book itself was well written and the story line was interesting but all in all, I was disappointed with the book

It was a very interesting book, especially from a medical professional that is very scientific about everything. It was slow in some spots, but a very good read overall. I am glad I took the time to buy it.

A fascinating journey for physicians and non-physicians alike: this account of a man's illness and experience during coma would fascinate non-physicians and non-scientists in and of itself; but the fact that the man is a physician and one who prior to his coma would have rejected all possibility of religious experience as being as real as any conscious experience of reality makes the book potentially fascinating to doctors and those who are skilled in the scientific method of inquiry. One noteworthy and highly respected neurologist has taken aim at his thesis, but he was unable to convincingly demolish it. Until I read this book, due to my medical training, I had wanted to believe in God but I could not develop it. Reading Eben Alexander, MD's experience of God helped me connect with God in an intensely condensed and powerful way.

Proof of Heaven by Dr. Alexander was a deep and thorough journey about his experience with the next life. I believe in an afterlife, but what I appreciated most about reading this book was how non preachy and concisely written it was. He gives the reader the heart and soul of the gift he has been given in a very serious illness. He also writes a nice flowing account that keeps the reader interested. Reading it reminds me a bit of the book written by a Neuroanatomist Jill Bolte Taylor called My stroke of Insight. Her book is another account of the human spirit and the importance of this life we are given. Dr. Alexander tells us the same story of hope and love, not to be afraid of what is to come, but to be grateful and thoughtful of every moment we are given. The miracle of life and hope is the message I take away from this book. It helps to read and educate myself to think about others and be good to them and myself. Thank you for writing this book and not dumbing it down and explaining it scientific terms.

Excellent. Shock, sadness, hopel--these are only a few of the many emotions I felt while reading this book. I cried, I smiled, and for the first time in a very long time, I felt some comfort and peace, knowing that there is more waiting for me when it's my time. It's an important read if you're anything like me--having little faith, wanting to believe in something but having difficulty doing it...and hoping that those you have lost are still with you.

I thought this book was very interesting and provocative. It is well written and reads easily. The flow of thoughts and continuity in writing is clear and concise. The fact that this type of book is written by someone with such a strong scientific background adds to the interest and makes it all the more compelling. Whether a NDE has happened to you or someone close to you this book is a must read, if only for the sense of community. If you are just doing research or choose to disbelieve it is also a must read for the credentials Dr. Alexander brings to the discussion of NDE's.

Late one night a couple of weeks ago, I was surfing the Internet {no surprise to anyone...lol} and noticed a friend on Facebook asking for suggestions of a good book to read. Another friend of mine responded with, "...you have to read, Proof of Heaven, it's amazing". I was in the midst of reading another book so my daughter decided to read it first. She often reads in the living room and would sometimes leave the book sitting on a side table. One day I walked by to see my husband totally engrossed in reading this book, which was a bit of a surprise. Not that he was reading, just that he was reading this book. It was not the usual biography/history type book he would normally pick up. OK, I'm going to put this out there right now. Even though I was born and raised in a fairly strict Catholic household, I am on the fence about the whole "heaven" concept. I want with all my heart to believe there is something else, a place beyond this world; but, logically I cannot. I envy (FYI, envy is not a "good" Catholic word, but, it is how I feel) people who truly, beyond a shadow of a doubt, believe there is "something else". They have nothing to lose and immense peace of mind to gain, and I want to be one of them. However, I am more apt to believe religions use their dogma to control morality and without "heaven and hell" hanging over us, we would live in a world of total mayhem and chaos. If what the believers say is true, they have spent this life content in the knowledge they will someday be reunited with all who have gone before them. If it isn't true, well they will never know the difference. The logical part of my brain keeps questioning how a place like "heaven" could that possibly exist, to me, it makes no scientific sense. My husband and daughter both talked incessantly about this book and insisted I had to read it. And I did. Am I a believer now? Hmmm...what I can tell you is this. It took me days to read this short book. I found it to be quite tedious, but it was also very thought provoking and even a little scary. My husband whizzed through it in a few hours, he was and still is a believer, which has actually always surprised me as well as brought me a lot of comfort. He is the smartest person I know and I have to think, if he believes, I must be missing something. He was a believer prior to reading this, so for him the book served as confirmation. And me? Well, I guess I was hoping for undeniable proof of heaven. I was quite disappointed that I personally, did not find irrefutable evidence and that I am still on the fence. Maybe I wanted it too badly and was just asking too much.

Amazing life changing book

I read this book and it has reinforced what we all wonder and feel. A must read for any believers, non believers, skeptics, religious or spiritual people or scientific people. Life is much more then we see with our eyes and hear with our ears. Ask any spuritual person and they will tell you that fact, ask any scientists and they too will tell you this same fact. Life is more complicated then we can imagine. This is a must read book. I truely enjoyed it and have purchased 3 hard copies just to give to loved ones as gifts. Blessings

A therapeutic reconciliation
July 19th, 2013
While there is no scientific "physical and visible" proof that the author has truly gone to the afterlife, his journey compels us to think of its possibility. After all, it makes me wonder if NDE has to do with reuniting with oneself as did the author with the Butterfly. If so, then is NDE a pure brain mechanism to comfort oneself via reconciling with one's loved one in virtual reality?

It really helped me alot after the lost of my husband just to know that he is right here with me. I had a Doctor that told me to read the book that it would help me to understand things better about death and we know that we can also go to our Father in Heaven to help us. We know that he is always with us and loves us very much. We are his children.
