Synopsis

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • NOW A STARZ ORIGINAL SERIES

This eBook includes the full text of the novel plus the following additional content:
• An excerpt from Diana Gabaldon’s Dragonfly in Amber, the second novel in the Outlander series
• An interview with Diana Gabaldon
• An Outlander reader’s guide

Unrivaled storytelling. Unforgettable characters. Rich historical detail. These are the hallmarks of Diana Gabaldon’s work. Her New York Times bestselling Outlander novels have earned the praise of critics and captured the hearts of millions of fans. Here is the story that started it all, introducing two remarkable characters, Claire Beauchamp Randall and Jamie Fraser, in a spellbinding novel of passion and history that combines exhilarating adventure with a love story for the ages.

OUTLANDER

Scottish Highlands, 1945. Claire Randall, a former British combat nurse, is just back from the war and reunited with her husband on a second honeymoon when she walks through a standing stone in one of the ancient circles that dot the British Isles. Suddenly she is a Sassenach—an “outlander”—in a Scotland torn by war and raiding clans in the year of Our Lord . . . 1743.

Claire is catapulted into the intrigues of a world that threatens her life, and may shatter her heart. Marooned amid danger, passion, and violence, Claire learns her only chance of safety lies in Jamie Fraser, a gallant young Scots warrior. What begins in compulsion becomes urgent need, and Claire finds herself torn between two very different men, in two irreconcilable lives.

Disappointing

Was curous a out the Scottish/celtic time travel tale for a light read vut had to abandon about halfway through. It didnt hold my interest and (plot spoiler?) couldnt stomach the lead female character's submission to being beaten by her husband.

Many people love this book and it is now a show. I unfortunately just could not stay sufficiently interested due to the strong historical nature of the book. I'm more interested in true stories or creepy fiction

Started by watching the series of Outlander on STARZ and LOVED it so I had to get the book because I just couldn't wait till the next season to find out what happens and OMG, it's SO AWESOME!!! A definite must read!! I'm on to the next book in the series. Thank you for putting out such a wonderful, powerful book full of action, intrigue, love and romance like NO other. I've read A LOT of books and this is BY FAR one of the best series of books I have EVER had the honor to read.

Refreshingly Addictive
September 8th, 2014
Usually I stick mostly to classical books. They have a certain depth that can't be rivaled by the majority of modern day compositions. However, Outlander is an outstanding exception. When something can take you to another time & place in your own minds eye without you even having to try, it can truly be called a work of art. I literally could not put this work of art down which is evident in the fact that I read Outlander in its entirety in little under a month. (A great conquest for me considering my unrelentingly busy schedule) It was a great pleasure to read something that I found bliss in again & to associate with meaningful characters that put you through almost every aspect of the emotional spectrum! Rich in detail & imagination. Rich in emotion & intelligence. I recommend Outlander to all lovers of literature & I hope the Starz series will live up to it's greatness.

First this novel was a historical piece, then it was sci-fi, then it was romance, then action-adventure. For all the things "Outlander" is and can be at any given moment, on any given page, at any given sentence or word, it will always remain a masterpiece. Thank you, Diana Gabaldon. Thank you.

::Warning * This book is like crack and you will become addicted to this series! Outlander was a roller coaster from beginning to end. It started of a little slow, but I had read previous comments that it picks up after the first hundred pages. Quite accuretly so, but nothing could prepare me for how obsessed I would become with the lives of these characters. Diana Gabaldon is a wonderful writer and knows how to keep her readers hooked. It is my all time favorite book!::

Offensive, needlessly graphic, and smutty. At one point, Jamie punishes Claire for disobeying him by literally spanking her - which was treated as perfectly understandable, and was quickly dismissed. I am amazed that so many women rave about the series

So when I saw them in the Kobo selections I purchased each and everyone of them. I never lend my Kobe out so I will always have them. A warning too all readers. You will not be able to put them down, and you will read them several times over the years.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading these books and have reread the series several times, I will do so again whilst I wait for the next book coming out later this year. The story is very plausible and has you gripped from the start, its hard to put the books down as you want to know how things are going to progress. As the plot takes you back to a turbulent time in Scotland's history when the clans were decimated and wearing of tartan cloth was an offence punishable by imprisonment, deportation to America sold into bondage, and even death. The author has researched the history of the time and also gives an insight into the lives people and of their struggles and heartaches. The medical and herbal knowledge is also very interesting and comparisons are made between the two times centuries apart. I have passed on the series to family and friends who have also enjoyed reading them.

I have read this series and LOVED LOVED LOVED it. I have Diane's next book on order "Written In My Heart' s Blood and can not wait. I am NOT a chick flick reader so it took me awhile to be convinced to read these books. I actually became depressed to find out that the series was winding down. I don't usually reread books but I am with this series. While reading this I giggled, cried, and was fascinated with the thought of time travel and how we have to be very careful with everything we interact with. If you haven't read this series, you are missing great books!

LOVE IT. Bought the first on a whim because it had everything that I like, history, romance, suspense, esc. Got hooked, and have had to wait for every book since. The latest has been released in this month, and I cannot wait to get my hands on it. Was in the Yukon going to Coles looking for it, but had not hit the shelves yet. Claire and Jamie Frazer have got to be the most fascinating characters I have ever read about. Love the time travel/jumps. I had all of the books at one point, donated them to the local library, and now have them again. I reread these every year, and it never gets boring. Come on Diana, work faster, because I cannot get enough of this series.

Absolutely loved this entire series beginning with this book. The characters very quickly became a part of my life and I couldn't put any of these books down. It's a good thing because they are very long; but, with a good book and characters you love, you want the book to go on and on and on. Think, perhaps, some books in the series were more intriguing and engrossing than others; but, just loved being a part of the characters' lives and couldn't wait to see what was going to happen next. Am so anxiously awaiting the next and possibly last in the series. Much too long a wait between. However, I don't reread books or see movies twice. Have told so many friends and neighbours about these books. Many are a little afraid to take on such huge books and so many of them. Told them to just read this book and see how they feel after reading the first one. For me, these books are certainly 5 star quality.

Best book I've ever read along with the books following it, and best series. I am eagerly awaiting the next book in the series which I've been reading for over 20 years now. Her characters are well developed and intricate. The plot has many twists and turns. If you enjoy romance, adventure mixed with actual history you will love this series. I could identify with the heroine and enjoyed learning about the tumultuous scottish history of the time. Diana Gabaldon researches her books well. I have re-read parts of this book many times. A. This series was recommended to me and I will forever be grateful. Once I started this book I couldn't put it down and the same has been true of the entire series. It is the only one I have ever reread and will do again. Captivating love story, historically accurate , a little bit of fantasy with the time travel and enough war and adventure to keep it rolling smoothly. It was recommended to be by a man so it is good for everyone. Give it a try even if it isn't your normal genre, once you get into the Scottish lingo you will be hooked.

I read this series so long ago but it is memorable. I was so impressed with it that I introduced my mother to it and she has the whole series as well as three autographed books which I stood in line for at my bookstore. The historical content is invaluable Getting wrapped up in their lives and the long forgotten times was a treat. I couldn't wait for the next volume. The books kept me enthralled and the characters were actually believable to the point of my mother and I trying to figure out who could play the part of James Fraser. It didn't matter who played Claire because he would have made us love her no matter who she was. It was an exciting series and read a couple of the Lord John series but then I got bored.

I love reading historic fiction! This is interlaced with magic, mystery, adventure and romance. All the details, all the problems, challenges, solutions described in detail! Diana draws you into the story and you never want to leave. You must read quickly but you never want the story to end. You wait impatiently for the next book. This is a well written, well researched novel that makes you believe it could happen to you! You want more and more!

A fabulous story with characters that you will fall in love with. Diana Gabaldon paints beautiful scenes of Scotland with rich text. You will feel like you have travelled back through the stones along with Claire and you will be taken on a historical adventure through the highlands. You won't be able to stop with just one book... The entire series will capture your heart as the lives of Jamie and Claire play out.

AMAZING book and start to an outstanding series. I re-read this while on my first trip to Scotland (happy coincidence) and it just made everything come even more alive. I love Claire and Jamie and the adventure of their separate and combined journeys. Fantastic read.

I loved this novel combining historical fiction and time travel. The characters are intereting and have great depth, not to mention that Jamie is so sexy! I am very glad I did not find this book to read when it was first published as I don't think I could stand the wait for the next one to be written! It takes you into not only the life of a family but a time period and culture. So good you can't put it down to sleep!

This is a very interesting and well written book! I loved the main character and her whitty and strong personnality. She made me laugh out loud at times. The story starts off with a bang and plunges the reader in a completely different world, part historial fiction, part science fiction and all action. And a great love story to boot!

Diana Gabaldon has written a spell-binding series with the Outlander books. Once started, I cannot put them down and when finished, impatiently await the next. While many historical facts are stretched, I can overlook this in the way that she has put the story together.

Loved this book! Bought for a friend who had read it at another friend's house and wanted a copy of her own. Upon her urging I borrowed it to read and never have it back. I loved it so much I'm getting and e-copy and will finally return my friend's. Seriously great series. I'm not usually a fan of time travel, makes it difficult for me to suspend reality and become absorbed in a story. Not in this case. There is so much to this book that I easily lost myself in the story. Burnt food, didn't hear my husband or children until they waved hands in my face. And the books that follow are every bit as captivating. Do yourself a favour, buy it. You'll read it and be telling your friends to do the same. Believable characters that have depth and an exciting plot. A really great ride, I not ready for the book to end. ...and oohhhh Jamie, please whisper to me in Gaelic.

This is a 5-star story with 2 stars deducted for reasons I will explain below. First the good: This is a well-researched story which begins in post-WWII with an English military nurse transplanted along with her husband to the Scottish countryside to start over their new life after a 7-year wartime separation. Having read much ACTUAL WWII literature written at that time, Claire's voice was credible and believable. More good: Thanks to a little paranormal mishap involving some standing-stones, Claire suddenly finds herself transported back in time 200 years to Scotland during the beginnings of the Jacobite rebellion. There she runs into none other than her 1940's husband's ancestor, who turns out to be a very bad man. Some Scottish highlanders rescue her just before she can be raped and drag her, even though they think she's an English spy, to stitch back together Jaime, a handsome young Scottish man who becomes important to her over the course of the story. The author pieced together meticulously the way these 1700's Scottish people live and the journey is a fascinating one. From there I won't elaborate more because it contains too many spoilers... Now the bad: Back to the 'bad man' ancestor of her husband, this is where we get into the two deducted stars. Rape has always been, unfortunately, a part of war. That the bad man tries to rape Claire does not surprise me. Nor that we later learn this same bad man purportedly raped Jaime's sister. But then the bad man captures Claire and tries to rape her again. And re-captures her and tries to rape her again. And then captures her husband and tries to rape HIM as well. And rapes some other poor slob we hear about. And then the highway men who try to rape her. And then there is the pedophile lord who's a 'good guy' other than the fact he likes young boys. At what point does a story cross a line? When is rape is no longer used to portray a woman's worst fears and the horror of war, but becomes gratuitous? I think that line was far, far crossed by the third (and definitely by the fourth) rape scene. Enough, already! This story would have been perfect if not for the titillating depictions of rape. It went too far. It ruined my enjoyment of the story and left me feeling unsettled (and not in a good, thoughtful way) instead of satisfied. I will likely snag the second book in this series at some point because I have fallen in love with Jaime and Claire and am a full-blooded Celt with a soft spot for Highlanders, but if -that- book as well has gratuitous rape scenes, it will be my last one by this author.

I have read many books in my life but NOTHING compares to this. Diana Gabaldon has created characters that you completely fall in love with, and you can 't put the book down until you know exactly what happens next. The historical detail is amazing and definitely adds to the story. No matter what other books I read I always return to Jamie and Claire and the Outlander books!! Have re-read them many times.

Outlander was given to me as a gift and I started reading not expecting to like it but to my surprise, I absolutely loved this book and purchased and read all the others that follow in this series. The story is so captivating that it's difficult to put this book down. I dreamt of the caracters and got very intrigued to always find out more. I read ever minute I could. After reading all the available novels in this series, I am very looking forward to the sequel coming out in 2014. If you want a great book and more, be ready to fall under the spell of the Outlander series!
