Synopsis

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • SOON TO BE A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE • NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY KIRKUS REVIEWS

Never go back—but Jack Reacher does, and the past finally catches up with him. . . . Never Go Back is a novel of action-charged suspense starring “one of the best thriller characters at work today” (Newsweek).

Former military cop Jack Reacher makes it all the way from snowbound South Dakota to his destination in northeastern Virginia, near Washington, D.C.: the headquarters of his old unit, the 110th MP. The old stone building is the closest thing to a home he ever had.

Reacher is there to meet—in person—the new commanding officer, Major Susan Turner, so far just a warm, intriguing voice on the phone.

But it isn’t Turner behind the CO’s desk. And Reacher is hit with two pieces of shocking news, one with serious criminal consequences, and one too personal to even think about.

When threatened, you can run or fight.

Reacher fights, aiming to find Turner and clear his name, barely a step ahead of the army, and the FBI, and the D.C. Metro police, and four unidentified thugs.

Combining an intricate puzzle of a plot and an exciting chase for truth and justice, Lee Child puts Reacher through his paces—and makes him question who he is, what he’s done, and the very future of his untethered life on the open road.

Don’t miss Lee Child’s short story “High Heat” and an excerpt from Lee Child's Night School in the back of the book.

Praise for Never Go Back

“A breathless cross-country spree . . . some of the best, wiliest writing [Lee] Child has ever done . . . Child’s bodacious action hero, Jack Reacher, has already tramped through 17 novels and three e-book singles. But his latest, Never Go Back, may be the best desert island reading in the series. It’s exceptionally well plotted. And full of wild surprises. And wise about Reacher’s peculiar nature. And positively Bunyanesque in its admiring contributions to Reacher lore.”—Janet Maslin, The New York Times

“Welcome to the relentless world of Jack Reacher and his impressive tendency to be in the wrong place at the right time. . . . Child has created an iconic character that other thriller writers try to emulate but don’t come close to matching. He has a talent for taking material that in the hands of other authors would be stale and making it seem fresh. . . . Tight and compelling . . . Never Go Back is one of Child’s best novels.”—Associated Press

“An adrenaline-charged, action-packed thriller . . . impossible to put down.”—Lansing State Journal

“The dialogue has never been sharper. . . . The pages turn themselves.”—San Antonio Express-News

“For the pure pleasure of uncomplicated, nonstop action, no one touches Reacher.”Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

“Brilliant . . . Child never, ever slips. He keeps the action cranking better than anyone, but, best of all, he keeps us guessing about Reacher.”Booklist (starred review)

“One of the best in the series.”Publishers Weekly (starred review)

Only Reacher can turn a potential date into an escapee from military holding cell. Thoroughly enjoyed learning more about Jack Reacher's days as CO of 110th MP division before his retirement. To come back and find himself reenlisted to face trial for a crime he doesn't remember, demands for child support for a 15 yr old girl in California are all part of a great reading experience. One of my favorite Reacher novels to date.

Look, I watch Cosmos. I browse Nature. I'm also a Jack Reacher fan. This book doesn't bring in any of his old friends from the 110th, but it's a satisfying couple hours of a man's man beating justice into bad guys. How do you not appreciate that?

I had read every single book by Lee Child and this is not one of his best. As usual, Lee peeled away the layers of the story and the story climaxed when the conspiracy was revealed. However, this time, I feel that the storyline was not as good as Lee's previous works. The sense of urgency was not as intense.

Like most Reacher fans - I've read em all and can't wait for the next installment. However "Never Go Back" seemed to be a tired Reacher story, without the level of urgency, involvement and Reacher payoff you normally get from Lee Child. Overall it felt flat and formulaic. A few real head-scratchers as well, events that seemed far-fetched or inserted so we can hurry up and get to the ending. Overall disappointing and the least impressive Reacher so far. Bummer

Awesome, like all the rest! Keeps you right on the seat of action, page by page, and you just can't put it down. Undeniably one of the best heroes in action literature - Jack Reacher. Built on descriptive and plausible situations, handled with intelligence and physicality, Lee Child has created a legacy with the Reacher novels and a large fan base. Forever readable and go back ... right to the very beginning and read it all over again!

Another Great Read
October 8th, 2013
As always, Lee Child does not disappoint. To those of us who have faithfully followed the series have watched the character of Jack Reacher grow and mature, like an old friend. I wait and watch for each new title, can't wait to open it, and when it ends... It's a cross between satisfaction, and the dreaded feeling of having to WAIT for the next book.i have re-read each book at least a dozen times and will continue to recycle them. This series is my favorite, by far, and I hope Lee Child never ends the series. As for a review, it is definitely worth the time and as a loyal Reacher fan, anyone who picks up this book will have a difficult time putting it down. Please, PLEASE, keep these books coming, I can't wait to see where he ends up next and what he stumbles across. An unlikely hero with his own code of justice. I love this character!!!

Never Go Back - Lee Child
October 5th, 2013
Superb as usual. Even knowing Tom Cruise is going to star in this in movie version, doesn't detract from the excellence of this character. I can still picture Jack as 6'5", 250 even though I've seen the diminutive Tom Cruise play him already. He's the usual strong silent type. It's gratifying to know Lee is not writing this to Tom's tiny statistics. If Lee can discern the difference between book and film version, he writes it so we can too. Plot is not forced because of rush to make gazillions of dollars in film revenue. He expertly carves intricate plots and leaves us in suspense as he always does. Lee knows what will become of his character on screen and doesn't care. His creation doesn't bow to any restrictions. I truly admire how he stays true to his loyal followers and writes as if the book is all he cares about. It really shows.
