Synopsis

Ali Winters is not having a good day. Her boyfriend left her, everyone in town thinks she's a thief, and now she's about to be kicked out of her home. Her only shot at keeping a roof over her head and clearing her name is to beg for help from a police detective who's as sexy as he is stern....

After a high-profile case goes wrong, Luke Hanover returns to his hometown for some peace and quiet. Instead he finds a bombshell brunette in a heap of trouble. As he helps Ali put her world back together, the pieces of Luke's own life finally seem to fall into place. Is this the start of a sizzling fling? Or are Luke and Ali on the brink of something big in a little town called Lucky Harbor?

So far I have enjoyed every one of the installments in this series. But this one, I have to say, had the most interesting and complex characters I have yet to see in the Lucky Harbor series. I loved it! Ali's luck has taken a hike. She was dumped, is practically homeless, accused and arrested of stealing and has just fallen in lust with Luke. Okay, so the being in lust with Luke part is no hardship when you think about it, but he is so exasperating, that at times it felt that way. Luke is having a hard time dealing with his job, among other things. He is emotionally closed off, stubborn, exhausting and so freaking sexy with his low-hanging board shorts it's pathetic that I am even salivating as I type. Yes, he was that HOT! Jill Shalvis did an amazing job in bringing these characters to life (as you can probably tell by my drooling over Luke). She managed to pair up two totally different personalities and still make it seem believable that Luke and Ali can come together outside this story. Ali, with her easy-going personality and positive outlook in life even when life threw hard punches at her, was a treat to get to know. I loved her immediately. And Luke? Duh, well that was a none issue. Who could resist a handsome, clueless and troubled detective in board shorts ? Not me, that's for sure. But besides that, I enjoyed the emotions he brought to the surface, his doubts and his struggles. it showed what a great man he was that he was dealing with all those issues and still had the heart to help someone in need. Reluctantly, but he did help regardless. I enjoyed the way that Jill Shalvis approached bringing these two together. They fought, they exchanged meaningful conversations, but most of all their silence spoke volumes. I loved their flirtatious banter, their in-your-face dialog and their chemistry. Every time these two were in a room together the sexual tension could be felt through the page. One look, one sigh, one touch. Awesomeness in every encounter! ... Oooops, I kind of got sidetracked there for a minute. Yes, the story was great too. I liked the whole mystery behind the burglary, the secondary characters and what they brought to the story and of course I enjoyed visiting Lucky Harbor. There's always something or someone new to discovery every time I visit. I can't wait to read more about Leah, Ali's best friend. She was so awesome in this story. Although It Had to Be You is the seventh book in the Lucky Harbor series it can be read as a stand alone. However, if you have not read the previous books, I encourage you to because this is one series you won't want to miss. I received this title from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange of my honest opinion.
