Synopsis

In his international blockbusters The Da Vinci Code, Angels & Demons, and The Lost Symbol, Dan Brown masterfully fused history, art, codes, and symbols. In this riveting new thriller, Brown returns to his element and has crafted his highest-stakes novel to date.

In the heart of Italy, Harvard professor of symbology Robert Langdon is drawn into a harrowing world centered on one of history’s most enduring and mysterious literary masterpieces . . . Dante’s Inferno.

Against this backdrop, Langdon battles a chilling adversary and grapples with an ingenious riddle that pulls him into a landscape of classic art, secret passageways, and futuristic science. Drawing from Dante’s dark epic poem, Langdon races to find answers and decide whom to trust . . . before the world is irrevocably altered.

Decent, but not his best work.
July 23rd, 2014
I enjoyed Inferno, but consider it the least interesting of the Robert Langdon novels. I don't find the Divine Comedy to be as interesting a piece to focus on as the focal points in the other novels. I also found the secret organization working against Langdon to be less compelling than the Illuminati or Masons. I also found myself occasionally bored by the descriptions of the art and architecture, which I don't ever recall feeling while reading the previous novels. I do think this book is worth reading for Dan Brown fans, but I'm definitely glad that I decided to wait until the price dropped significantly before picking it up.

July 9th, 2014
This is the fourth, and, hopefully, last novel featuring, hero, Robert Langdon. In this story Langdon faces his fellow academics in another race against time. While the story moves along at a good clip, with plenty of twists and turns along the way, we encounter many of the same tropes and ideas that are found in Brown's other books and the reader gets the distinct feeling that he/she has read this somewhere before. However, if I sold as many books as Brown does I would take the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" attitude as well. While I enjoyed the book I would hope that we can leave Robert Langdon to his teaching career and let someone else save the world.

Boring, Boring, Boring
July 6th, 2014
Just like jus last book "the lost Symbol", it was a huge disappointment, I believe that Brown is suffering from the "The Code Curse", His "Angels and Demons" and "The Da Vinci Code" were his greatest achievements, Apparently he can not top these, he reached his peak and now declining, It is a huge waste of time, believe me , not worth it, you can read its plot summary in wiki or elsewhere and save your precious time and effort!

Dan Browns ability to weave a tale of mystery and suspense braided with history and great characters makes his books hard to put down. Inferno is no exception. His description of Venice, Florence and Istanbul make you feel as though you are right there with him. His characters are multi dimensional and jump off the page. Interesting but...
May 17th, 2014
Interesting solution to over population problem but this is the third or fourth outing for Langdon in a "world-ending" crisis, will he ever stop being a distracted tour guide and take action? His constant musings on art and symbology which are interesting to a point slow down the action and any good film editor would tell you that 1/2 or more of the "extended" scenes in this book would need to be cut. They also make the situation seem unbelievable. He's running for his life AND trying to prevent the release of a toxin that may kill millions but he has time to take in and think about every art - architectural - archeological do-dad he come across. UNBELIEVABLE and Boring. Browns non-Langdon efforts are much more exciting.

Inferno poses the question of what can be done to deal with the ever increasing human population. And of course Dan Brown takes us on an adventure intertwined with the plot of human population control. If you have ever been to or are going to Florence, Venice or Istanbul you will enjoy Inferno that much more. The action starts in Florence, moves to Venice and then finishes in Istanbul as we move amongst real places with exquisite detail given in the Dan Brown manner. I thoroughly enjoyed Inferno. I like an action book, but one that does not let go of reality. Inferno was believable, with real places so you felt like you were right there involved in the action.

I find it well written as I do anything Dan Brown writes. But while the suspense had me turning pages, it's so pact with information about Venice, (history, art and culture) some of which is just trivial and really has nothing to do with the book. I lost my place several times and had to go back to find where the story left off. In my humble opinion still a great book.

Having read Dan Brown's other Robert Langdon novels, I was excited for this book. The mix of action, mystery, and historical information appeals to me as a reader, but I think the quality of Brown's writing dropped after the first two books. I was happy that the setting of this novel moved back to Europe from America, where it was in the previous book. However, the story lacked that special something that Angels & Demons and the Da Vinci Code had that hooked me. The dialogue seemed choppy as well, with characters repeating to other characters what they had just said. Basically, the basis of the story is sound, but I think it could have benefited from a few more editing sessions to bring the quality up to the standards we expect from Brown.
