Synopsis

Book 1 in the Refiner's Fire series. The daughter of a wealthy slave-holding family from Richmond, Virginia, Caroline Fletcher is raised in a culture that believes slavery is God-ordained and biblically acceptable. But upon awakening to the cruelty and injustice it encompasses, Caroline's eyes are opened for the first time to the men and women who have cared tirelessly for her. Her journey of maturity and faith will draw her into the abolitionist movement, where she is confronted with the risks and sacrifices her beliefs entail.

Candle in the Darkness

I have read many books on the Civil War but none of them can compare to this story. I felt like I was right there in the midst of a horrible war trying to figure out what God's plan was for me as a Christian trying to follow his will. The cost too high for doing the right thing. This story is vivid. Captivating not only complete attention but also making me wonder what I would have done if I was there but also how it applies to following God's will in my own personal life. This is a must read for every Christian who is trying to decide God's direction for their life.

This book deals with two subjects I usually avoid reading about but it was so well written that I found it hard to put down. I really enjoyed how these subjects were handled. A good book.

Awesome

I found the story line to be somewhat unoriginal at first but kept reading because it was a nice "light read." As the story progressed, I found myself being increasingly drawn in until I couldn't put it down.

The characters and history made this book hard to put down. You can picture what is going on and it is very real. Didn't like the numbers typed in the middle of sentences.

This brought the civil war to life and made it so real, horrific and totally interesting. It was like 'gone with the wind' only with more substance and meaning. I loved every word of it.
