Synopsis

After 103 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list and with four million copies of The Kite Runner shipped, Khaled Hosseini returns with a beautiful, riveting, and haunting novel that confirms his place as one of the most important literary writers today.

Propelled by the same superb instinct for storytelling that made The Kite Runner a beloved classic, A Thousand Splendid Suns is at once an incredible chronicle of thirty years of Afghan history and a deeply moving story of family, friendship, faith, and the salvation to be found in love.

Born a generation apart and with very different ideas about love and family, Mariam and Laila are two women brought jarringly together by war, by loss and by fate. As they endure the ever escalating dangers around them-in their home as well as in the streets of Kabul--they come to form a bond that makes them both sisters and mother-daughter to each other, and that will ultimately alter the course not just of their own lives but of the next generation. With heart-wrenching power and suspense, Hosseini shows how a woman's love for her family can move her to shocking and heroic acts of self-sacrifice, and that in the end it is love, or even the memory of love, that is often the key to survival.

A stunning accomplishment, A Thousand Splendid Suns is a haunting, heartbreaking, compelling story of an unforgiving time, an unlikely friendship, and an indestructible love.

This is one of the best books I have ever read. I love his books and often google search to see when his next book will come out. The book takes place over a period of 30 years for two Afghani women. It is a story of true friendship and love. It gives you a look into what life must be like in their country where one struggles to survive. I am now reading his newest book, And the Mountains Echoed. GREAT AUTHOR.

I really liked this book. It was recommended by a friend of mine. I found interesting how the author described the characters and how the story is told from the characters point of view. I liked the fact that I could learn some words from that culture. What I think was the most amazing thing is how the author describes the life of Afghan women, the relationship between husband and wife and also the political situation in Afghanistan.

It was an interesting book and one felt really drawn to the two main women, but everything seemed overly dramatized. The male characters seemed one sided with little depth, which is not realistic. Also, the book spanned so much time that sometimes things seemed really disjointed. Glad a read it, but doubt it is a re-read.

out of the many books I have read this stands out as a pillar of my reading- profound is a word that springs to mind and for people who have any interest in lands not so afar that feature in our western political landscape - this is an eye opener. Please read and share.

I thought nothing would top The Kite Runner but A Thousand Splendid Suns is equally as compelling and heart breaking. Khaled Hosseini must be one of the best authors of the modern age. I can't wait to read his next book.
