Synopsis

Winner of the Nebula Award for Best SF Novel of the Year

The year is 2312. Scientific and technological advances have opened gateways to an extraordinary future. Earth is no longer humanity's only home; new habitats have been created throughout the solar system on moons, planets, and in between. But in this year, 2312, a sequence of events will force humanity to confront its past, its present, and its future.

The first event takes place on Mercury, on the city of Terminator, itself a miracle of engineering on an unprecedented scale. It is an unexpected death, but one that might have been foreseen. For Swan Er Hong, it is an event that will change her life. Swan was once a woman who designed worlds. Now she will be led into a plot to destroy them.

    Must read hard scifi

Rarely have I read any thing of this caliber. The pages were bursting with information and knowledge. His thoroughness has made other novels difficult to read

The underlying plot was OK. The journey there was long. The lists were tedious. Some of the concepts were interesting, terrarias and the qubes. I'm glad I finished this book. I hate to say that I won't recommend it: I know how much work must have gone in this.

    Fascinating and engaging

This seems to be based in the future of Robinson's Mars trilogy. Great extrapolation from that. But reading those is not a prerequisite for reading this. The characters drew me in. It's as detailed as Robinson's other work, but I enjoyed how he encapsulated the story. Not ready for another epic right now.

This author has written half a novel. He is great at describing future worlds and technology. What he does not understand is suspense, pacing or character development. Parts of the book were interesting, but it was a hard book to finish.
