Synopsis

From the New York Times and internationally bestselling author of The Distant Hours, The Forgotten Garden, and The House at Riverton, a spellbinding new novel filled with mystery, thievery, murder, and enduring love.

During a summer party at the family farm in the English countryside, sixteen-year-old Laurel Nicolson has escaped to her childhood tree house and is happily dreaming of the future. She spies a stranger coming up the long road to the farm and watches as her mother speaks to him. Before the afternoon is over, Laurel will witness a shocking crime. A crime that challenges everything she knows about her family and especially her mother, Dorothy—her vivacious, loving, nearly perfect mother.

Now, fifty years later, Laurel is a successful and well-regarded actress living in London. The family is gathering at Greenacres farm for Dorothy’s ninetieth birthday. Realizing that this may be her last chance, Laurel searches for answers to the questions that still haunt her from that long-ago day, answers that can only be found in Dorothy’s past.

Dorothy’s story takes the reader from pre–WWII England through the blitz, to the ’60s and beyond. It is the secret history of three strangers from vastly different worlds—Dorothy, Vivien, and Jimmy—who meet by chance in wartime London and whose lives are forever entwined. The Secret Keeper explores longings and dreams and the unexpected consequences they sometimes bring. It is an unforgettable story of lovers and friends, deception and passion that is told—in Morton’s signature style—against a backdrop of events that changed the world.

Enjoyed the twists and turns in the plot. Interesting method of solving and decoding a long time family secret! The different personalities of the siblings was so real as we mostly experience much the same type of differences in families. The interpretation and handling of a disturbing event happening when a child also made the read so interesting. Perfect unexpected ending!

This is the fourth book I've read by Kate Morton. I really enjoy her style of writing and this one kept my interest from the very beginning. It is a wonderfully written mystery which follows the lives of a close knit family in the final days of their mothers life. A mystery surrounding their mother's past comes to light and the eldest sister finds that she is compelled to solve this mystery. Along the way we learn about her mother and her past loves and losses and her daughter's own suppressed memories. It has a wonderful twist at the end that I was completely surprised by - overall a compelling read!

My first time reading Kate Morton. She is a great story teller and will now look at some of her other books. It is an evenly paced story that makes you ponder. The author tells such an intricate tale, I found it difficult to put down. The ending - is - totally unexpected. Awesome

Currently this is my favorite book. I received it as a gift and it was the first Kate Morton book I read. I couldn't put it down! My kids told my I spent the WHOLE weekend sitting on the couch, and I did, because I had to finish this book. The characters and plot had be so engrossed that I wanted to inhale those words. Reading at its true escapism best. This is one of those books that you can't turn the pages fast enough yet you want to cry when you finish it. I knew I would have to read many, many more books before I came across one as grand as this. I haven't found that book yet. Thank you Kate Morton, I'm hooked!

As usual with Kate Morton a book you just want to keep on reading. She has a knack of keeping the interest in the story going by to and fro-ing between eras. Back to an idyllic childhood, the war years and the present time. A very good read.

The Secret Keeper is the first Kate Morton book I've read - it won't be the last. The book switches between WW2 and present day and the characters, although all complex in nature, just grab you and take you on their journey. Amazing read and can't wait to read some of her other books
