Synopsis

Here is Douglas Adams's indispensable guide to life, the universe and everything. This sublime collection dips into the wit and wisdom of the man behind THE HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY, uncovering his unique comic musings on everything from his school-trousers to malt whisky and from the letter Y through to his own nose, via atheism, hangovers and fried eggs. Including short stories and a lengthy unpublished Dirk Gently extract, THE SALMON OF DOUBT is for fans and new readers alike. These hilarious collected writings reveal the warmth, enthusiasm and ferocious intelligence behind this most English of comic writers; a man who was virtually an unofficial member of the Monty Python team.

Loved it.... a reminder on how badly he is missed
June 29th, 2015
For my generation, at least, DNA was an eye opener. I grew up hearing the radio shows, I bought the books. I loved the TV series. I .. dont know what to think about the film.... but through all those incarnations of H2G2 there was a common thread. The importance of satire and absurdity as a vehicle for social commentary. Reading the early part of the book is to read little articles about DNA. There's the little Zaphod short story, an amazing little find. Then there's the Salmon of Doubt itself, an amazingly tantalising start to what could have been an amazing story. Its so sad it ends as it does. Where is Gusty Wind's back end? Does Desmond now? Who was the client who brought Dirk to Santa Fe? We may never know. To read any DNA now always installs a little sadness in me, that we have lost a unique perspective on the universe. But this book, disjointed between reviews, articles and stories as it is, is a great way to say good bye to a man who perhaps knew where his towel was far better than anyone else. Don't buy this expecting a full story. It ends suddenly, unexpectedly. But if you love DNA, its a must-buy.
