Synopsis

It is Christie's first published novel, and introduces Hercule Poirot, Inspector Japp and Lieutenant Hastings. The story is told in first person by Hastings, and features many of the elements that, thanks to Christie, have become icons of the Golden Age of Detective Fiction. It is set in a large, isolated country manor. There are a half-dozen suspects, most of whom are hiding facts about themselves. The book includes maps of the house, the murder scene, and a drawing of a fragment of a will. Also, there are a number of red herrings and surprise plot twists. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Mysterious_Affair_at_Styles

This is the first Agatha Christie book I have read. I am a huge fan of David Suchet's portrayal of Hercule Poirot, now I have enjoyed the original "script" I can appreciate his interpretation. I recommend reading this and I will read more Christies.

Not one of my favourites

I didn't like this one, but I'll be easy going because it was a "first time at bat". This story could have used far more character development and description. Also it withheld the substance of the clues until the end of the book, pretty much taking the reader along for the ride as opposed to giving them the opportunity to play detective themselves and sort out their own theories. It is very much a product of it's popular books of its time, light, breezy, heavy on dialogue. A quick brain candy read and worth it for the curious or mystery fan.

Agatha Christie never disappoints

Good read. Many twists and turns. Unfortunate that I find Hastings, who is a main character and the story is told by him, very annoying.
