The Moonstone

One of my absolute favourite books! The subtle humour and multi-narrative style keeps things fresh and fast-paced. Definitely worth a read and re-read(s)!

"The Moonstone" by: Wilkie Collins

A unique writing style, this story is told as if by a series of people's recollections and testimonials thereby shifting perspectives and opinions on several occasions. While an intriguing mystery, it is by no means a quick read! For those who enjoy the styles of its time period(written I believe in 1868; placed in 1848-1850), rather longer in description than is now fashionable, will greatly appreciate and enjoy this riveting story! While I would classify it a "Mystery" it has a "Romance" (with the usual sort of ups and downs) running throughout and sprinklings of humor & tragedies. Those accustomed to the modern, quick paced, "summer beach read" type mysteries may tire with this longer and less exciting pace. I think it falls between a Bronte style of writing and Conan Doyle's (not as slow as the former or fast as the latter). While I enjoyed it and think it worth the effort if you enjoy classic, romantic style writings, if that is not your style be for warned - you will likely find it "boring"! Just as those who enjoy today's fast paced action movies in 3D seldom enjoy classic B&W films and vice versa!
