Emotional read

I chose to read this based on a "must read" list that I reviewed a short time ago. It was not a book I had ever considered reading because I did not hear good reviews of the film. This book however was fantastic! Unique ideas and lots of emotion poured out of it. I strongly recommend.

This is Alice Seibold's first novel and its getting a lot of press and attention. The story is narrated by a 14 year old girl who has been murdered and is telling her story from heaven. (Quite a gamble for a first novel). The story is quaint and believe it or not it works but it was nothing to rave about! I'm so sick of people portraying mothers as being so weak that grief forces them in the arms of other men and causes them to run away from or ignore their other children (a la Jacquelyn Mitchard-The Deep End of the Ocean) My estimation is that the women I know are so much stronger than that and would die themselves before leaving or losing their other children. I just don't know what people are raving about. Oh, and get this: the killer, a creepy, odd, little man, a serial killer is killed when the girl causes an icicle to fall off of a building and kill him before he can hurt another girl. Iicle are the perfect murder weapon, a favorite in heaven because they melt-and yet the author herself says that you cannot cause any change from heaven. The other disturbing part is when the main charactor "falls" out of heaven into her best friends body because she died before she had the "pleasure" of making love to her boyfriend the first time---Just awful stuff!

I read this book years ago , then reread it - and still I loved the way she painted her picture . A bit disturbing at time yet a great depiction of what , perhaps the family and victims may face.

I really liked this book...very different approach to telling a story that captured me from the beginning - had to know 'what and how'....sad at times and frightening - could it happen in real life - Yes....Not up there with the best, but glad I took the time
