Synopsis

Don't Sweat. Don't Laugh. Don't draw attention to yourself. And most of all, whatever you do, do not fall in love with one of them.

Gene is different from everyone else around him. He can't run with lightning speed, sunlight doesn't hurt him and he doesn't have an unquenchable lust for blood. Gene is a human, and he knows the rules. Keep the truth a secret. It's the only way to stay alive in a world of night--a world where humans are considered a delicacy and hunted for their blood.

When he's chosen for a once in a lifetime opportunity to hunt the last remaining humans, Gene's carefully constructed life begins to crumble around him. He's thrust into the path of a girl who makes him feel things he never thought possible--and into a ruthless pack of hunters whose suspicions about his true nature are growing. Now that Gene has finally found something worth fighting for, his need to survive is stronger than ever--but is it worth the cost of his humanity?

The Hunt has a unique premise and is delivered well. I enjoyed the story overall, but it was just good to me, not great. I wish there was more world building and back-story. I want to know more about the vampires, how it all went down before the world was dominated by vampires, etc. I have so many questions and I'm so curious about these things. I wish they would have been explained more. I feel as though, even though the vampires are in this book a lot, we don't actually know that much about them (for example, I want to know whether they have families. Can they procreate or not? Do they age? None of these types of questions are answered). To me, they don't seem that different from humans, other than a couple obvious differences (i.e., can't go out in daylight, drink blood, lack of emotions). But, they seem to live similar lives to that of humans. The vampires go to school, work, have relationships, etc. I want to know the nitty gritty details! The story was good. It was captivating, intense, and well-plotted. There were many times when I was afraid for the main character, Gene. He has to be extremely careful every day, every moment, in order to not be found out by the vampires as being a human. He has to shave his entire body, hide his smell, keep a straight face at all times, eat what they eat, etc. I definitely connected with this character and rooted for him. I have very mixed feelings about this book. While I really liked some things, other things really bugged me.
