The Five Books of Moses: A Translation with Commentary

This book finally made it possible for me to read the Bible. The translation is good but the notes are invaluable. The Bible, especially the oldest parts that are included in this book, is too old and comes from a culture too far from us to be understood without notes. Alter's notes are mostly focused on the literary aspects (structure and language) but they also help understand in what context the book was written and what some sentences might mean. My only problem was that the notes are grouped at the end of each chapter and not linked in the main text (they are organized by verse instead), which makes reading a bit impractical in ebook form.
