Synopsis

WINNER, 2013 Hugo Award for Best Novella!
Nominee, 2013 World Fantasy Award for Novella!

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Brandon Sanderson, The Emperor's Soul showcases a fascinating magic system as the clock ticks down for a condemned criminal.

When Shai is caught replacing the Moon Scepter with her nearly flawless forgery, she must bargain for her life. An assassin has left the Emperor Ashravan without consciousness, a circumstance concealed only by the death of his wife. If the emperor does not emerge after his hundred-day mourning period, the rule of the Heritage Faction will be forfeit and the empire will fall into chaos.

Shai is given an impossible task: to create—to Forge—a new soul for the emperor in less than one hundred days. But her soul-Forgery is considered an abomination by her captors. She is confined to a tiny, dirty chamber, guarded by a man who hates her, spied upon by politicians, and trapped behind a door sealed in her own blood. Shai's only possible ally is the emperor's most loyal councillor, Gaotona, who struggles to understand her true talent.

Time is running out for Shai. Forging, while deducing the motivations of her captors, she needs a perfect plan to escape…

"Sanderson proves to be an exceptionally talented writer in the pages of this book. Complex as some of the background is, he never gets bogged down filling in details for the reader. Instead we learn everything we need seamlessly as the story unfolds. His prose is lyrical without ever getting in its own way ... His characters are fascinating and fully realized. ... The Emperor's Soul is one of those rare high fantasies that feels fresh and is filled with a sense of wonder." —Charles de Lint, The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction

This was a wonderful and tragically short read. My affection for Brandon Sanderson's ability to invent amazing new magics in each book I read has grown exponentially with this book. But I want more! Much much more!

I loved this book. It is a simple tale which explores the nature of art and the drive of one artist while set in a fantasy world. Brandon Sanderson manages to explore an entire world/kingdom from within the confines of a room. The detailed prose helps bring the world to life while avoiding the over-explicitation of the unexperienced writer. I highly recommend this book to lovers of fantasy or art.

This is one of the best fantasy books I've read. I was totally fascinated by the way the magic, the Forgery, worked, how delicate it was to replicate anything. It helps that Shai isn't a two-dimensional heroin, who doesn't use her talents just for profit. Sanderson hits at more that makes the reader hope this is just a prequel. Oh, and I loved all the plotting involved in forging a Soul for the Emperor.

This story is well thought out with a strong female main character. Shai, the main character is creative in the way she overcomes the challenges presented to her. The book is fast paced and an interesting quick read.

I read this as part of my 2013 Hugo prereading and it was the first piece I had read by Brandon Sanderson. I was quickly swept into the world and the plight of the lead character and wanted to read more once I got to the end.

This is an author who continually reinvents fantasy concepts and ideas. I have yet to be disappointed by his work. This short establishes and world about which I hope we have more opportunities to learn about.

This has got to be my favourite Brandon Sanderson book so far. The Way of Kings is brilliant but this one tells a complete story is a short and concise way while giving you a very in-depth understanding of the protagonist. There are no long journey descriptions or big fanciful events requiring big displays of magic, that are typical of so many fantasy novels or stories. In this case, Brandon has created a simple magic system and tells a story that has glimpses of the magic throughout. Although, I can't wait for the release of his next instalment in the Stormlight Archive, I would really like him to write more novellas and novels like the Emperor's Soul. This is well worth a read for anyone who has any interest in Fantasy but above all, like a good well written story.

Interesting Story/Concept...
January 14th, 2014
The Author has come up with an interesting concept with this novel - using intricately carved stamps, a talented Forger could rewrite a person's soul. The highly illegal Master Forger Shai has the opportunity to do her greatest work; rewriting the Emperor's soul so that no one ever knows or suspects he's a copy. If you're a fan of Patrick Rothfuss or Anthony Ryan, you'll enjoy this.

Good story
November 7th, 2013
The characters, the system of magic, the descriptions were all done very well. I had some difficulty with reconciling the level of skill against her apparent age, though. But other than that,a very tight plot, and his usual lovely descriptions made an excellent story.

Sanderson scores again!
October 6th, 2013
This story is an example of why but Brandon Sanderson is becoming one of my favorite authors. The characters are believable and you will find yourself pondering what it is exactly, that our souls are made of. My only regret is that it was so short. Somehow I had expected a full length novel

It won a Hugo, which should be enough to convince most people to read it. If not, I recommend it simply because it is an outstanding work considering its size. It won't take long to read, just try it; trust me. :)
